Job Overview: The Cleaner position is crucial in maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for unaccompanied migrant children (UMC) residing in Greece. The successful candidate will be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of assigned facilities, ensuring that all areas are kept in an orderly condition. This role involves direct interaction with UMC, assisting them in keeping their living spaces clean and organized. The Cleaner will work under the supervision of the Facility Coordinator and will be part of a team dedicated to providing essential care and support to vulnerable children. The position requires a commitment to high standards of cleanliness and the ability to work effectively in a challenging environment, often under minimal supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Cleaner will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: ensuring that all facility premises are kept clean and orderly, which encompasses cleaning rooms, office spaces, balconies, lavatories, corridors, stairs, backyards, gardens, and surrounding areas. The Cleaner will also manage garbage disposal and ensure that all cleaning supplies are used appropriately for different surfaces and equipment. Additional responsibilities include organizing and assisting UMC with their laundry, operating washing machines and dryers, preparing and following cleaning schedules, and reporting any maintenance issues to the Facility Coordinator. The Cleaner will also be tasked with maintaining stock levels of cleaning supplies and preparing lists for procurement as needed. Other duties may be assigned as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school degree or certificate and have at least one year of relevant working experience. Training or certification related to cleaning or maintenance is considered an advantage. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies is beneficial, as is the ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure. Good communication skills, personal commitment, and flexibility are essential for this role, along with the ability to work with minimal supervision and under difficult conditions.
Educational Background: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Candidates with additional training or certifications relevant to cleaning and maintenance will be viewed favorably. Accredited educational institutions recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database are preferred.
Experience: Candidates should have proven working experience as a Cleaner, demonstrating familiarity with cleaning practices and the use of cleaning chemicals. Experience in a similar role, particularly in environments involving vulnerable populations, is highly desirable. The ability to work in shifts, including afternoons and weekends, is also necessary.
Languages: A working knowledge of Greek, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in IOM's official languages, which include English, French, and Spanish, is considered an asset and will be evaluated during the selection process through written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Greece will be eligible for consideration. The appointment will be contingent upon medical fitness certification, verification of residency, and necessary government authorizations. The Cleaner role may involve daily presence at various Emergency Accommodation Facilities in Attica, including locations such as Piraeus and Aspropyrgos.
