Job Overview: The Cleaner position at IOM Greece is crucial in maintaining a clean and safe environment for unaccompanied migrant children (UMC) residing in Greece. The successful candidate will be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the assigned facility, ensuring that all areas are kept in an orderly condition. This role involves not only cleaning but also assisting UMC in maintaining their personal spaces, thereby contributing to their overall well-being. The Cleaner will work under the supervision of the Facility Coordinator and will be expected to follow cleaning schedules, report maintenance issues, and manage cleaning supplies effectively. This position is part of IOM's broader mission to provide targeted care interventions for vulnerable populations, particularly children, in the context of migration and asylum.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Cleaner will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: ensuring that all facility premises are kept clean and orderly, which encompasses cleaning rooms, office spaces, balconies, lavatories, corridors, stairs, backyards, gardens, garbage disposals, walkways, and surrounding areas. The Cleaner will also be responsible for using appropriate cleaning supplies for different surfaces and equipment, organizing and assisting UMC in keeping their rooms tidy, managing laundry operations, preparing and adhering to cleaning schedules, and reporting any maintenance issues to the Facility Coordinator. Additionally, the Cleaner will ensure that lavatory supplies are always available and will maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies, preparing lists for procurement when necessary. The role may also include performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school degree or certificate, along with at least one year of relevant working experience. Training or certification related to cleaning or facility maintenance is considered an advantage. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies is beneficial, as is the ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision. Good communication skills, personal commitment, and flexibility are essential for this role, as well as the ability to work under challenging conditions and in shifts, including afternoons and weekends.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a high school degree or certificate. Candidates with additional training or certification relevant to cleaning or facility maintenance will be viewed favorably. Accredited educational institutions are those recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that the qualifications are valid and recognized.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have proven working experience as a Cleaner, demonstrating familiarity with cleaning practices and the use of cleaning supplies. Experience in a similar role, particularly in environments serving vulnerable populations, is advantageous. The candidate should be able to showcase their ability to maintain cleanliness and order in various settings, ideally with a focus on facilities that cater to children or similar demographics.
Languages: For this position, a working knowledge of Greek is mandatory, both oral and written. Additionally, a working knowledge of English is advantageous, as IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish. Proficiency in these languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments to ensure effective communication within the organization and with the populations served.
