Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position in the Trade Policy and Facilitation Section (TPFS) of the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division at UN ESCAP is designed for candidates interested in gaining practical experience in trade policy work. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that contribute to the organization's mission of supporting sustainable and inclusive development through trade. The internship is expected to last between 4 to 6 months, with opportunities for both remote and onsite participation. Interns will work closely with professional staff and experts, gaining insights into trade-related issues and contributing to research, analysis, and policy guidance for governments in the Asia-Pacific region. This role is particularly suited for individuals with academic backgrounds in economics, law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law, or data management, as they will be involved in conducting research, drafting documents, and supporting training and capacity-building initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will have a diverse set of responsibilities that may vary based on their background and the needs of their supervisor. Key duties include: conducting policy research on trade-related issues such as digital trade, e-commerce, and global value chains; drafting background documents and policy notes; preparing presentations and training materials; supporting data collection and analysis; maintaining databases; editing and formatting papers; and assisting in the organization of seminars, training sessions, and meetings. Interns will also be involved in communication tasks, including preparing event documents and managing social media outreach. The role requires strong communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria: commitment to a six-month internship (onsite or remote), enrollment in or completion of a graduate program in Economics or Law, experience in international trade or development policies, experience in data management and analysis, and strong drafting and communication skills in English. Candidates should also demonstrate proficiency in relevant software and highlight any research or work experience related to the fields of Economics, International Trade, or Development Economics.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess an academic background in Economics, particularly in areas such as international trade economics, development economics, econometrics, or international law. Enrollment in a graduate program or completion of a first university degree (minimum bachelor’s level) is required. The internship is open to students or recent graduates who can benefit from the experience and contribute to the UN's mission.
Experience: While work experience is not mandatory for applying to the United Nations Internship Programme, any relevant experience in international trade, development policies, or data analysis will be considered an asset. Candidates with practical experience in regulatory analysis or trade agreement analysis will be prioritized, as will those with strong media and communication skills.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is essential for this internship. Knowledge of additional official UN languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.
