Job Posting Organization:
The position is located within the Haiti Team of the Americas Division of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO). The Americas Division is dedicated to preventing conflict, mediating disputes, and sustaining peace across the region. It is structured into three sub-regional teams and two field-mission backstopping teams, each led by a Team Leader and supported by Desk Officers and Team Assistants. The Division is overseen by a Director and Deputy-Director, ensuring strategic priorities are met for various countries and regional organizations in the Western Hemisphere. The Haiti Team specifically focuses on issues related to Haiti, providing support to the UN special political mission in the country, known as BINUH, and advising senior UN officials, including the Secretary-General.

Job Overview:
The Political Affairs Officer plays a crucial role in monitoring and analyzing developments in Haiti, particularly the interactions among political groupings, governments, and regional organizations. The officer is responsible for reviewing information relevant to Haiti's situation, preparing timely responses to inquiries from both field and headquarters, and drafting various documents that analyze the political and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security situation in Haiti. This includes creating reports for the Secretary-General, briefing notes for the Security Council, and press releases. The officer also assists in formulating the team's work program and budget, ensuring that the administrative matters concerning the Haiti Team are managed effectively. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying issues that require follow-up and action, as well as maintaining communication with a wide range of stakeholders, including UN agencies and member states.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Political Affairs Officer is tasked with several key responsibilities: monitoring and analyzing political developments in Haiti and their regional implications; reviewing and synthesizing information from various sources to identify critical issues; preparing responses to inquiries related to Haiti's political and operational matters; drafting and reviewing documents such as analyses, reports, and briefing notes; assisting in the formulation of the team's work program and budget; and overseeing administrative matters related to the Haiti Team. The officer must also ensure that gender perspectives are incorporated into all areas of work and that the team operates collaboratively to achieve organizational goals.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in political science, international relations, law, or related fields. The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in relevant areas such as political science, international relations, or conflict resolution. At least one year of experience in backstopping field operations related to political and security issues is essential. Experience in supporting political processes and working in security-challenged environments is also required, along with a demonstrated ability to conduct gender-sensitive political and conflict analysis.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in fields such as political science, international relations, law, or development management. Candidates should have at least one year of experience related to backstopping field operations of the United Nations on political and security issues. Experience in supporting political processes and working in security-challenged environments is desirable, as is experience in gender-sensitive political and conflict analysis.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, both oral and written. Knowledge of French is desirable, and proficiency in another official United Nations language is considered an advantage.
