Job Overview:
The Political Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the Security Council's efforts to monitor and analyze political developments related to terrorism and international peace and security. The incumbent will gather and analyze information from various sources, maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant events, and provide substantive support to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies. This position requires a deep understanding of political dynamics, particularly concerning terrorism-related issues, and the ability to communicate effectively with senior officials and colleagues. The officer will also participate in missions to countries within their area of responsibility, providing logistical support and preparing background information for these trips. Overall, the role is integral to the UN's mission of maintaining international peace and security.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: gathering, selecting, and analyzing information from communications and publications; maintaining knowledge of political and terrorism-related issues; monitoring national and regional political developments; providing technical and substantive support for the implementation of Security Council mandates; maintaining contacts with other UN sectors and international organizations; monitoring actions taken by intergovernmental groups and NGOs; classifying and storing information in databases; participating in Security Council missions; preparing meetings for the Chairs of Committees and the Monitoring Team; and performing other related duties as required. The role demands a proactive approach to identifying potential threats to international peace and security and requires the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of the policies and procedures of the Security Council, as well as the ability to analyze complex political, ethnic, and social issues. The role requires excellent organizational skills, the ability to summarize information effectively, and a commitment to gender perspectives in all areas of work. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a strong work ethic, with the ability to remain calm under pressure and meet deadlines.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or a related area is required. Candidates should have experience working on UN sanctions issues and providing substantive support to the Security Council or its subsidiary organs. Experience in peace and security issues, particularly those related to terrorism, is desirable, as is experience in drafting formal correspondence and reports for intergovernmental bodies.

Languages:
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position. Fluency in another official United Nations language is desirable, which may include French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian.
