Job Overview: The Maternal Health Intern will work under the direct supervision of the SRHR Data Specialist and the guidance of the SRHR/Maternal Health Advisor at the UNFPA Asia-Pacific Regional Office. The intern will support the planning, development, and implementation of activities aligned with the UNFPA Strategic Plan 2022-2025, particularly focusing on achieving the transformative result of zero preventable maternal deaths by 203
The intern will engage in a structured work plan that includes agreed tasks and deliverables, as well as learning opportunities to enhance skills related to UNFPA's mandate. The role involves contributing to knowledge management, strategic communications, and advocacy efforts related to maternal health and midwifery, as well as strengthening maternal health data systems and Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care networks.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for providing high-quality support to the SRHR Data Specialist and SRHR Technical Advisor in various aspects of maternal health program implementation. Key activities include leading knowledge management processes for midwifery education courses, supporting the finalization and dissemination of the State of the World’s Midwifery Workforce Analysis Regional Study, organizing online training courses for midwifery educators, and assisting in the strengthening of maternal perinatal deaths surveillance and response systems. The intern will also engage in data analysis, develop case studies, and collaborate with technical partners to enhance maternal health initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program, in the final year of a first university degree program, or have recently graduated with a university degree. The selected intern should have an educational background in public health, medicine, midwifery, health sciences, social sciences, development studies, or related fields. Additionally, candidates should possess strong analytical and writing skills, demonstrate initiative and sound judgment, and have the ability to work harmoniously with diverse teams.
Educational Background: Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements: be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program, be in the final year of a bachelor's degree program, have recently graduated with a university degree, or be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program. The educational background should be in fields relevant to public health, medicine, midwifery, health sciences, social sciences, or development studies.
Experience: Some experience working with development agencies, including volunteer work, is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate fluency in English and possess strong analytical and writing skills. Experience in multicultural settings and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams is essential.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
Additional Notes: Interns do not receive a salary or remuneration from UNFPA. Costs associated with the internship must be covered by the intern or their nominating institution. A small stipend may be provided to help cover basic daily expenses if the intern is not financially supported by any institution. Interns are required to have medical insurance for the duration of the internship, and proof of insurance must be submitted before the internship begins.
