Job Overview: The Protection Officer – GBV Prevention will play a crucial role in leading initiatives aimed at engaging men as allies in the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV). This position involves developing materials focused on violence prevention and wellbeing for men, facilitating psychoeducational sessions, and managing day-to-day operations related to GBV prevention. The officer will work closely with male beneficiaries to foster discussions around gender equality, positive masculinity, and healthy family dynamics. The role requires a proactive approach to community engagement, ensuring that activities are culturally sensitive and effectively address the needs of both men and women in the community. The officer will also be responsible for building relationships with community leaders and facilitating training sessions that promote healthy relationships and gender equality.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Protection Officer – GBV Prevention include providing technical oversight to GBV prevention activities, leading the formation of male groups, and organizing awareness events focused on gender equality and GBV. The officer will facilitate training sessions for community leaders and male beneficiaries, co-facilitate weekly sensitization sessions, and support the prevention team in community engagement activities. Additionally, the officer will ensure that all administrative procedures are completed for the Women and Girls Centers, identify strategies to promote social cohesion, and liaise with government officials and community leaders. The officer will also be responsible for developing activity plans, supporting recruitment processes, and participating in monitoring and evaluation activities to assess the effectiveness of GBV prevention initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Public Health, social work, or political science, or have equivalent professional experience. A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in NGOs, particularly in women’s protection programs, is required. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and the prevention of GBV, possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and have experience working with diverse communities, particularly Rakhine and Rohingya populations. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory, while knowledge of local languages is considered an asset.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Public Health, humanities, nursing, social work, or political science. Alternatively, equivalent professional qualifications or experience in related areas may be accepted. The educational qualifications should provide a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of gender-based violence and the necessary interventions to address it.
Experience: The position requires at least 2 years of professional experience working in NGOs, specifically in roles related to women’s protection, empowerment programs, or similar fields. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in implementing programs that address gender-based violence and promote gender equality. Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly in conflict-affected areas, is highly desirable.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is proficiency in English, both written and spoken. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in English to engage with diverse stakeholders and report on activities. Knowledge of local languages is considered an asset, as it can enhance communication with community members and facilitate better engagement in program activities.
Additional Notes: The position is based in Sittwe, Myanmar, and candidates must be willing to work in this location. DRC offers a regular contract with a 3-month probation period, which is renewable based on funding and performance. The salary and conditions will be in accordance with DRC’s Terms of Employment, and the position is classified within Employment Band H, which is a non-management level.
