Job Overview:
The UN News Stringer (Portuguese) position is designed to enhance the UN's storytelling capabilities by producing and submitting multimedia content in Portuguese. The role involves creating a maximum of ten approved packages of multimedia content that reflect local voices and field-based narratives related to UN activities, particularly focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), human rights, and climate issues. The stringer will work closely with the relevant Unit Chief to discuss and plan the production of quality multimedia content, ensuring that it aligns with UN priorities and resonates with the target audience. This position requires a proactive approach to pitching story ideas, conducting research, and producing engaging content suitable for both news and social media platforms. The expected duration of this role is a maximum of six months, during which the stringer will be expected to deliver high-quality narratives that contribute to the UN's mission of informing and engaging the public on critical global issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UN News Stringer include: • Liaising with the relevant Unit Chief to discuss and plan the production of multimedia content on various issues, ensuring that the narratives align with UN priorities and campaigns. • Pitching story ideas and agreeing on timelines and content to be produced, incorporating diverse storytelling approaches suitable for news and social media platforms. • Researching content from verifiable sources, writing stories and scripts, and creating multimedia stories (audio, video, photo, text) for UN News language platforms. • Coordinating technical arrangements and organizing interviews in the countries of assignment as required. • Following UN News guidelines to ensure editorial clarity and sound political judgment, including due diligence regarding permissions and copyright. • Possessing well-rounded experience in broadcast/digital journalism and multimedia production, with a strong emphasis on video production skills. • Providing references and work samples upon request, and ensuring compliance with national/local authorities regarding journalist registration or accreditation.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the UN News Stringer position include: • A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory. • A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is desirable. • A minimum of two years of experience in broadcast/digital journalism in the assigned language(s) is required. • Proven experience in the full range of multimedia production, including video production, filming, and editing, is essential. • Experience in recording and editing audio material, as well as digital content publishing, is desirable. • Familiarity with incorporating photos and graphics into multimedia content is also preferred.

Educational Background:
Candidates for the UN News Stringer position should possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent. A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is highly desirable, as it provides a solid foundation for understanding the principles of effective storytelling and multimedia production.

Experience:

Additional Notes:
This position is located within the UN News Section of the News and Content Branch, part of the News and Media Division in the Department of Global Communications. The stringer will prepare content based on clear instructions from the commissioning office, typically the language Unit Chiefs, and will report directly to them. The agreement for this role is for a maximum duration of six months.
