Job Overview: The UN News Stringer position is designed to produce and submit multimedia content that enhances the work of UN News Language Units. The role involves creating a maximum of ten approved packages of multimedia content in English and Kiswahili, focusing on local voices and field-based storytelling related to UN activities. The content aims to highlight actions on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), human rights, and climate issues, ensuring that the narratives resonate with the target audience. The position requires collaboration with Unit Chiefs to plan and produce quality multimedia content, incorporating various storytelling approaches suitable for news and social media platforms. The stringer will also be responsible for researching, writing, editing, and creating multimedia stories that align with UN priorities and campaigns, while ensuring adherence to editorial guidelines and sound political judgment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Individual Contractor shall: • Liaise with relevant Unit Chiefs to discuss and plan the production of quality multimedia content on various issues, providing field-based narratives related to UN priorities and news developments. • Pitch story ideas and agree on timelines and content to be produced, incorporating diverse storytelling approaches for news and social media platforms. • Research content from verifiable sources, write stories and scripts, edit, and create multimedia stories for UN News language platforms, ensuring alignment with global priorities and local angles. • Coordinate technical arrangements and organize interviews in the countries of assignment as required. • Follow UN News guidelines, ensuring editorial clarity and sound political judgment, including due diligence regarding permissions and copyright. • Possess well-rounded experience in broadcast/digital journalism and multimedia production in the assigned languages, with skills in video production being highly desirable. • Provide references and work samples as requested.
Required Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is desirable. A minimum of two years of experience in broadcast/digital journalism in the assigned language(s) is required. Experience in the full range of multimedia production features is required, along with experience in video production, filming, and editing video material. Experience in recording and editing audio material, as well as digital content publishing and incorporating photos and graphics, is also desirable.
Educational Background: The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum educational qualification. A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is considered desirable, indicating a preference for candidates with formal education in relevant disciplines.
Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of two years of experience in broadcast or digital journalism in the assigned language(s). This experience should encompass a comprehensive understanding of multimedia production, including the ability to create and edit video and audio content, as well as publish digital content effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required for this position, as these are the primary languages for content production. Knowledge of other UN official languages is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader audience and produce content in multiple languages.
Additional Notes: This function is located in the UN News Section of the News and Content Branch within the News and Media Division (NMD) in the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The agreement for this position is for a maximum period of six months, with the number of content packages to be determined in discussion with the commissioning office, depending on fund availability. All packages must receive prior approval.
