Job Overview:
The Public Information Officer position is situated within the Communications & Public Information Section (CPIS) of UNMISS in Juba, South Sudan. This role is crucial for enhancing the visibility of UNMISS and its objectives among the South Sudanese population. The officer will be responsible for planning and executing awareness-raising events that utilize various forms of entertainment, such as drama, music, and sports, to engage the community and promote peace and reconciliation. The officer will also develop public relations strategies, create promotional materials, and organize events for significant UN-related observances. This position requires a proactive approach to building networks with influential figures in South Sudan and producing media monitoring reports to inform mission leadership. The officer will work closely with field CPI officers and will be expected to travel within the state and occasionally to other states to cover events and stories.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Public Information Officer will undertake a variety of tasks, including: planning and organizing awareness-raising events using creative methods; conceptualizing public relations plans and formulating key messages; producing promotional materials such as posters and flyers; organizing events for International Days; maintaining networks with high-profile officials and influencers; analyzing local media and producing reports; supporting field CPI officers; traveling to cover stories; distributing CPI print products; writing and editing content for outreach activities; contributing to the UNMISS website and social media; designing graphic materials using Adobe software; and performing other duties as assigned by the CPI Section Chief.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong communication skills, creativity, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. They should demonstrate professionalism and self-management, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team. The role requires sound judgment and decision-making skills, along with excellent planning and organizational abilities. Familiarity with public relations and outreach strategies is essential, as is the capacity to engage with diverse stakeholders in South Sudan.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, international relations, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in relevant areas will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the UN system and its operations, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in public information, communications, or a related field is required. Experience working in a multicultural environment, particularly in a conflict or post-conflict setting, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the South Sudan context and previous work with international organizations will be advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in South Sudan is considered a strong asset, as it will facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as a non-family duty station, and candidates should be prepared for austere living conditions with shared accommodation. The role is full-time, and the successful candidate will be expected to adapt to the challenging environment of South Sudan. The contract duration is until 15 March 2024, with the possibility of extension based on the mission's needs and funding availability. Candidates should be aware of the security situation in South Sudan and be prepared to work in areas prone to conflict.
