Job Overview: The Water and Sanitation Engineer will play a crucial role in the Engineering Section of UNMISS, specifically in Upper Nile State. This position involves overseeing all water and sanitation-related activities, ensuring that the infrastructure meets the needs of the mission and the local population. The engineer will be responsible for planning, managing, and executing water supply and sanitation projects, including the maintenance of existing systems and the installation of new facilities. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work under pressure in a politically sensitive environment. The engineer will also be expected to contribute to the overall mission objectives by ensuring that water and sanitation services are delivered effectively and efficiently, thereby supporting the health and well-being of the community.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Water and Sanitation Engineer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: planning and managing water and sanitation activities; undertaking installations related to water supply and sewerage; maintaining and operating water treatment systems; inspecting ongoing projects and reporting on progress; planning and constructing water supply pipelines; implementing treatment facilities; diagnosing and repairing sanitary installations; reviewing work orders; preparing bills of quantities; evaluating bids for projects; managing service contracts; contributing to the planning of water treatment facilities; preparing documentation for procurement; analyzing waste management systems; developing solutions to engineering problems; managing requests for spare parts; completing paperwork for product identification; designing installations; and performing any other related duties as assigned. Additionally, the engineer will engage in volunteerism activities and promote capacity development among local personnel.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in civil or environmental engineering, with specific expertise in water and sanitation engineering. They should demonstrate a high level of integrity and professionalism, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to teamwork are essential. The ideal candidate will also have experience working in challenging environments and a genuine commitment to the principles of voluntary engagement.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field is required. The mission provides basic residential facilities, but candidates should be prepared for shared accommodations and limited amenities.
