Job Overview: The Hydrologist position is crucial for the successful implementation of a large-scale project aimed at enhancing climate resilience among small-scale farmers and pastoralists in Tajikistan. The project, funded by the Adaptation Fund, focuses on the Kofirnighan River Basin (KRB) and aims to address the challenges posed by climate change, including increased extreme weather events and their socio-economic impacts. The Hydrologist will provide technical oversight in hydrological assessments, water resource management, and climate adaptation strategies. This role involves working closely with local farmers, project staff, and stakeholders to implement effective agronomic and hydrologic interventions. The Hydrologist will also facilitate capacity building and training for local communities, ensuring that sustainable water management practices are adopted and monitored effectively. The position requires a proactive approach to stakeholder engagement and knowledge dissemination, contributing to the overall success of the project and the resilience of the communities involved.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Hydrologist will be responsible for conducting hydrological assessments in the KRB, evaluating water availability, recharge trends, and flow patterns. They will provide technical guidance on the design and implementation of hydrological interventions, support sustainable water extraction and usage rates, and develop plans for responding to water-related emergencies. The role includes conducting training sessions for local farmers on advanced water management practices, developing tailored training materials, and facilitating knowledge transfer through practical demonstrations. The Hydrologist will assist in designing monitoring systems to track hydrological changes and the effectiveness of adaptation measures, collect and analyze data for adaptive management, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. They will engage with local communities and stakeholders to promote sustainable water management practices and document lessons learned and success stories for knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of secondary education, with a Bachelor's degree in Hydrology, Water Resources Management, Environmental Science, or a related field being preferred. A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in hydrology or water resources management is required for those with secondary education, while candidates with a Bachelor's degree need at least 4 years of relevant experience. Proficiency in computer skills, including text and spreadsheet programs, is essential. Desired skills include experience working with government bodies, UN agencies, and civil society in water resource management and climate adaptation, as well as experience in engaging communities and promoting inclusive approaches in project interventions.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes secondary education as a minimum. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Hydrology, Water Resources Management, or Environmental Science is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates with relevant professional experience may also be considered favorably, even if they do not hold a degree in the specified fields.
