Job Posting Organization:
The position is located in the Peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Section of the Communications Campaigns Service within the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications at the United Nations. The Peace and Security Section is dedicated to promoting the UN's work on critical peace and security issues, including conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, disarmament, and counter-terrorism. This is achieved through the design and implementation of global communications strategies and campaigns. The organization aims to engage global audiences and raise awareness about these significant issues.

Job Overview:
The Public Information Officer will play a crucial role in implementing communications strategies and campaigns that engage global audiences on priority peace and security issues and major events. This includes developing audience-targeted multimedia content, coordinating efforts with partners, monitoring and reporting on progress, and analyzing outcomes. The officer will also monitor current events and public opinion, advising management on appropriate actions and responses. The role involves promoting media coverage of priority issues through press conferences, interviews, and other activities, as well as managing the peace and security website and evaluating the impact of communications activities. The officer will prepare drafts for UN publications, maintain professional relationships with key constituencies, and may supervise junior staff. This position requires a proactive approach to communication and a deep understanding of peace and security matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Public Information Officer's responsibilities include:
  • Implementing communications strategies and campaigns to engage global audiences on peace and security issues.
  • Developing multimedia content and coordinating with partners.
  • Monitoring and analyzing current events and public opinion, advising management on responses.
  • Promoting media coverage through press conferences and outreach efforts.
  • Editing and writing web-optimized content for the peace and security website.
  • Evaluating the results and impact of communications activities, ensuring campaigns have clear KPIs.
  • Preparing drafts for UN newsletters and reports.
  • Initiating and sustaining professional relationships with key constituencies.
  • Planning outreach activities and public events on peace and security matters. 1
  • Acting as a focal point on specific issues and providing guidance to junior staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a comprehensive understanding of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential for effective campaign strategies. They should be able to analyze diverse information, identify public affairs issues, and handle sensitive situations diplomatically. The ability to produce clear written communications and deliver oral presentations is crucial. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, creativity, and client orientation, ensuring that services meet the needs of clients and stakeholders.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Candidates should have experience in campaign planning and execution, as well as editorial planning and writing/editing web and campaign content. Experience in web and social analytics is desirable, along with knowledge of peace and security matters.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, while knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage.

Additional Notes:
This position is temporarily available for an initial period of three months, with the possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a current UN staff member, the selection will be treated as a temporary assignment.
