Job Overview:
The Communication Consultant will work under the overall supervision of the Programme Manager for Active Mobility, Digitalization & Transport Integration, closely collaborating with the Sustainable Mobility team and Communications team. The primary focus of this role is to prepare a comprehensive communication strategy and work plan for the ACCESS Digitalization project, along with a series of sustainable mobility articles, newsletters, publications, and campaign strategies. The consultant will be responsible for ensuring the timely delivery of key communication products that align with the objectives of the Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU) within UNEP. This position requires a proactive approach to developing communication materials that effectively convey the unit's mission and initiatives, particularly in promoting sustainable transport solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communication Consultant will be tasked with several specific responsibilities, including:
  • Preparing a unit communication strategy for the ACCESS Digitalization project.
  • Developing a unit communication work plan for the ACCESS digitalization project.
  • Creating an event/campaign calendar to outline upcoming initiatives.
  • Writing a series of sustainable mobility articles, comprising 12 individual blog posts or web articles.
  • Producing two issues of a unit newsletter to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Preparing two unit publications that highlight key findings and initiatives.
  • Updating the event/campaign calendar as necessary.
  • Developing a slide deck for presentations.
  • Formulating a unit campaign strategy to enhance outreach and engagement.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in journalism/communication, urban development, sustainable development, public policy, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level degree with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, a minimum of two years’ experience in communication activities is required, including the development of communication strategies, work plans, and campaign calendars, as well as the creation of communication materials such as social media content, presentations, fact sheets, blogs, slide decks, and articles. Experience working for the United Nations or a similar international organization is also required, along with proven experience in the sustainable mobility sector.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as journalism/communication, urban development, sustainable development, or public policy. Candidates with a first-level degree may be considered if they have additional qualifying experience, demonstrating the importance of both formal education and practical experience in this role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in communication activities. This includes a strong background in developing communication strategies, work plans, and campaign calendars, as well as experience in creating various communication materials. Prior experience working with the United Nations or similar international organizations is essential, highlighting the need for familiarity with the UN's operational framework and communication standards. Additionally, candidates should have proven experience in the sustainable mobility sector, which is critical for understanding the context and messaging required for this role.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is the second official language of the UN. This bilingual requirement underscores the importance of effective communication in both languages to engage a diverse audience and stakeholders effectively.
