Job Overview: The Driver I position is integral to the STRIDES project, which aims to enhance infectious disease detection and surveillance systems in Kenya. The primary function of this role is to provide safe and reliable driving and messenger services to project staff and visitors. The driver will be responsible for maintaining the project vehicles in a clean and serviceable condition, performing minor preventive maintenance, and conducting daily safety checks. The role requires a commitment to supporting the project’s goals of improving public health through effective transportation and logistics management. The incumbent will be based in Nairobi but will also provide support to other counties where the STRIDES project is implemented, ensuring that all transportation needs are met efficiently and safely.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver I will be responsible for the following duties:
Drive project staff and visitors to various meetings, appointments, and fieldwork locations with caution and courtesy as assigned by the supervisor.
Assist in picking up and delivering project supplies as delegated.
Maintain the project vehicle in good condition, including regular cleaning and conducting daily checks on engine performance, fluid levels, and tire conditions.
Keep a current driving license and inform the Administrative Officer when vehicle licenses are due for renewal or require inspections.
Run office errands such as delivering messages, equipment, and collecting mail from post offices or courier services.
Ensure that all passengers adhere to traffic rules and regulations, including the use of seat belts.
Report any traffic accidents immediately to the insurance company and the supervisor.
Assist with office tasks such as photocopying and picking up supplies as needed.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Director or Administrative Officer.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the Driver I position should possess the following qualifications:
Knowledge of the counties and surrounding areas where the STRIDES project will operate, including streets, neighborhoods, airports, and government offices.
Proven experience as a safe driver with a valid driver’s license and no history of accidents.
Ability to lift heavy packages and move furniture as required.
Basic knowledge of First Aid.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
Punctuality and the ability to work extra hours when necessary.
A willingness to support the goals and programs of the STRIDES project.
Ability to perform all duties with minimal supervision and in a timely manner.
Educational Background: Candidates must have completed secondary school education ('O' level) or possess relevant vocational training certification. A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required, along with at least five years of experience working with a public or private organization in a role that involves operating motor vehicles, particularly four-wheel drive vehicles such as Landcruisers.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of experience in driving for a public or private organization, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience driving for diplomatic missions or NGOs. Experience with medium-to-large sized international organizations is also preferred. The candidate's experience should reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined in the job description.
Languages: A good working knowledge of English is mandatory, with the ability to understand both spoken and written English. Proficiency in Kiswahili is also required, as it is commonly used in the region. Additional language skills may be considered an advantage but are not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and based in Nairobi, Kenya. The expected salary range for this role is between KES 850,000 and 1,100,000 annually, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
