Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed to support the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section of UNEP's Office of Science. The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer and will be involved in various tasks related to data analytics and digital tools. This includes contributing to a foresight platform and analytical workflows that are crucial for environmental decision-making. The intern will be expected to assist in developing guidelines and methodologies for researching emerging environmental issues, conducting research on relevant data sources, and supporting the organization and enhancement of databases. The role is pivotal in compiling, assessing, and ranking evidence, as well as documenting data processes and methodologies. Additionally, the intern will assist in preparing technical inputs for reports, presentations, and briefs, thereby gaining valuable experience in the intersection of data science and environmental policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will report directly to the Programme Management Officer in the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the development of guidelines and methodologies for research on emerging environmental issues.
  • Conducting thorough research on various data sources and environmental issues.
  • Organizing and enhancing the existing database to ensure it is comprehensive and up-to-date.
  • Supporting the compilation, assessment, and ranking of evidence related to environmental data.
  • Documenting data processes, workflows, and methodologies to ensure clarity and consistency.
  • Assisting in the preparation of technical inputs for reports, presentations, and briefs, which will contribute to UNEP's mission of informed environmental decision-making.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is essential, as is a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
The preferred fields of study for applicants include Environmental Science, Data Science, Statistics, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Development, or other related fields. Candidates must be either students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a master’s or Ph.D. programme, or have completed such programmes. Proof of enrollment or completion will be required during the application process.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, it is essential that their field of study closely relates to the internship they are applying for. The internship is designed to provide practical experience and exposure to the workings of the United Nations, particularly in the area of environmental data analytics and policy.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
