Job Overview:
The position involves serving as a consultant for a Stocktaking Exercise on Adaptation and Mitigation Efforts related to Ghana's 2021 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The consultant will be responsible for assessing and compiling information on the current adaptation and mitigation strategies that Ghana has implemented as part of its commitments to the UNFCCC. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of climate change policies and practices, as well as the ability to analyze and synthesize data effectively. The assignment is expected to span 50 working days over a period of three months, during which the consultant will engage with various stakeholders to gather relevant information and insights.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Conduct a thorough review of Ghana's 2021 Nationally Determined Contributions to the UNFCCC, focusing on adaptation and mitigation efforts.
  • Engage with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to collect data and insights on current practices and challenges in implementing adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Analyze the collected data to identify gaps, successes, and areas for improvement in Ghana's climate action efforts.
  • Prepare a comprehensive report detailing the findings of the stocktaking exercise, including recommendations for enhancing adaptation and mitigation efforts.
  • Present the findings to relevant stakeholders and facilitate discussions on the next steps for improving Ghana's climate action framework.
  • Ensure that all work is completed within the specified timeline and adheres to UNDP's standards and guidelines.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in climate change, environmental science, or a related field. A proven track record of working on climate adaptation and mitigation projects is essential. Additionally, candidates should have excellent analytical skills, strong communication abilities, and experience in stakeholder engagement. Familiarity with the UNFCCC processes and frameworks is highly desirable. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, or a related field is required. Candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline will be given preference. Relevant certifications or training in climate change policy or project management will also be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 5 years of professional experience in climate change adaptation and mitigation, with a focus on policy analysis and implementation. Experience working with governmental and non-governmental organizations in Ghana or similar contexts is highly desirable. Proven experience in conducting assessments or evaluations related to climate action will be a significant asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all reports and communications will be conducted in English. Proficiency in local languages spoken in Ghana will be considered an advantage, as it may facilitate better engagement with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is a consultancy role with a contract duration of 50 working days over a period of three months. The consultant will be expected to work remotely and may need to travel within Ghana for stakeholder engagements. The position is open to both national and international candidates. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and in line with UNDP's consultancy rates.
