Job Overview:
The Migration Health Nurse will be responsible for performing daily nursing activities at the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Harare, Zimbabwe. This role involves fulfilling the technical requirements of resettlement countries through various medical examinations, including checking vital signs, collecting blood and urine samples, conducting imaging and laboratory tests, administering vaccinations, managing tuberculosis (TB) treatment, and ensuring proper documentation and certification. The nurse will also provide information and support to migrants and refugees regarding the health assessment process and necessary treatments. The position requires maintaining accurate records, following health assessment protocols, and collaborating with various partners to facilitate effective health assessments and follow-ups. Additionally, the nurse will be involved in pre-departure procedures and may perform medical escort duties to ensure continuity of care during migration.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct daily nursing activities in the MHAC, including medical examinations and health assessments.
  • Collect and analyze vital signs, weight, height, and visual acuity of migrants and refugees.
  • Perform blood, urine, or sputum collection as required for laboratory testing.
  • Administer vaccinations and manage TB treatment and referrals.
  • Ensure proper identification and follow-up of applicants through comprehensive history taking and accurate biodata collection.
  • Maintain a register of applicants undergoing health investigations and testing.
  • Implement Health Assessment Programme checklists and standard operating procedures (SOPs) while adhering to universal precautions.
  • Verify the proper transportation of biological samples to designated laboratories.
  • Manage the MHAC pharmacy and medical supplies, including emergency kits. 1
  • Provide pre- and post-counseling on TB and HIV education and prevention. 1
  • Prepare administrative reports and program updates as necessary. 1
  • Support mobile missions and assist with pre-departure documents and briefings. 1
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external partners for effective information sharing. 1
  • Collect and report statistical information to the Senior Migration Health Nurse or CMHO. 1
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution, with a valid nursing license to practice in Zimbabwe. The position requires excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, and experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and public health is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of clinical nursing principles, patient safety, infection prevention, and control, as well as proficiency in MS Office applications. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential for this role.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited academic institution is required. The educational institution must be recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. The nursing qualification should enable the candidate to fulfill the full scope of responsibilities outlined in the position description.

Experience:
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree must have a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience, while those with a Diploma must have at least five years of relevant clinical experience. Experience in areas such as TB management, mass immunizations, and communicable diseases is highly desirable. Proven clinical expertise or a post-graduate diploma/degree in clinical specialization in emergency care is an added advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English and a local language is required, both orally and in writing. Proficiency in IOM's official languages, which include English, French, and Spanish, will be evaluated during the selection process, potentially through written and/or oral assessments.
