Job Overview:
The Governance, Policy, and Advocacy Intern will play a vital role in supporting UNEP’s Climate security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security initiatives in Somalia. This position focuses on fostering robust governance frameworks, developing environmental policies, and building capacity for climate security solutions. The intern will engage with stakeholders, contribute to shaping policies, and strengthen governance mechanisms related to climate security. The role requires a proactive approach to research, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that UNEP's objectives in climate security are met effectively. The intern will work under the supervision of the Climate advisor" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Advisor and will be involved in various tasks that contribute to the overall mission of UNEP in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Policy and Governance Support: Assisting in research and advocacy efforts in collaboration with Somali government partners, contributing to learning and capacity-building initiatives on climate security, and engaging in policy-related research and advocacy tasks.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Supporting the coordination of meetings with stakeholders, including government and regional entities, and attending JOSP governance meetings to provide relevant inputs.
  • Event and Meeting Participation: Providing administrative and substantive support to meetings, including taking minutes, and attending relevant events in Nairobi while supporting event organization as needed.
  • Advocacy and Outreach: Drafting content for advocacy materials and contributing to public outreach activities, as well as supporting UNEP’s climate security campaigns and policy dialogues.
  • General Support: Assisting with logistics, coordination, and preparation of background documents for the team, and supporting other tasks as necessary to fulfill the objectives of the Climate Security program.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program in politics, international relations, or related fields. A strong understanding of governance, policy analysis, and advocacy strategies is essential. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively and adapt to a multicultural environment. Proficiency in research and report writing is also necessary for this role.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a graduate-level education in politics, international relations, or a related field. This educational background will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively engage in policy analysis, advocacy, and governance support within the context of UNEP’s Climate Security initiatives.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, any relevant internships or volunteer work in governance, policy analysis, or environmental advocacy will be considered an asset. The intern should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the dynamic environment of international organizations.

Languages:
Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory. Knowledge of another UN language is considered an asset and will enhance the candidate's profile for this internship.
