Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Research Assistant include: conducting surveys and facilitating discussions with youth and other stakeholders in Suva, Fiji; assisting in the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data related to smart city initiatives and urban governance; contributing to the write-up of findings and reflections from fieldwork; translating presentation materials and documents into local languages as necessary; supporting the facilitation of validation workshops with young people; coordinating with local Youth Advisory Groups to ensure regular communication; maintaining detailed records of research activities; contributing to the preparation of comprehensive research reports; organizing validation workshops for youth; and providing logistical support during fieldwork activities. The RA may also be required to perform any other tasks as assigned by the research team.
Required Qualifications: The position requires an advanced degree in urban studies, sociology, public policy, geography, or related fields. However, current graduate students or researchers in these areas may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, candidates must have at least two years of previous experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research, particularly in urban studies, human rights, or related fields. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, along with excellent organizational skills and the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders. A demonstrated commitment to social justice principles, equity, and inclusion is also required. Technical skills in data analysis software and familiarity with digital governance tools and participatory research are desired, as well as knowledge of the local context and challenges related to urban development in Fiji.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess an advanced degree in urban studies, sociology, public policy, geography, or related fields. Current graduate students or researchers in these disciplines may also be considered if they do not hold an advanced degree.
