Job Overview: The consultant will play a crucial role in implementing the Government of Japan Project, which focuses on emergency response to drought and natural disasters, as well as improving socio-economic conditions for both host and refugee communities in Kenya. The consultant will work closely with the Urban Practices Branch (UPB) and the Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) to achieve specific milestones and goals related to urban regeneration, disaster management, and community resilience. This position requires a proactive approach to engage with various stakeholders, including government entities and humanitarian actors, to ensure the successful execution of the project objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a range of tasks including:
Conducting validation workshops to finalize urban regeneration strategies and action plans, engaging with National and County Governments, host and refugee communities, and UN and humanitarian actors.
Compiling and finalizing an urban regeneration strategy report for the Kakuma-Kalobeyei area, ensuring its adoption at the county level through awareness and sensitization meetings.
Strengthening disaster response and management by reconstructing and rehabilitating infrastructure that is resilient to floods and droughts.
Enhancing local government and community preparedness for climate-related disasters through the implementation of early warning systems.
Promoting economic and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security for host and refugee communities by facilitating income-generating activities, particularly for women and youth.
Conducting geospatial analyses to assess vulnerabilities within communities and inform future project actions.
Supporting the preparation and execution of workshops and engagements focused on disaster preparedness and climate resilience.
Acting as a technical focal point within spatial planning and infrastructure working groups, coordinating with various stakeholders including the Turkana County Government and UN agencies.
Preparing spatial maps using GIS or other relevant software to support project implementation.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) in Urban Planning, Rural Development, Agricultural Science, Social Studies, or a related field relevant to sustainable urban development. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of urban planning principles and practices, particularly in the context of climate change resilience and sustainable development.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Urban Planning, Rural Development, Agricultural Science, or Social Studies is required. This educational background should provide a solid foundation in sustainable urban development principles and practices.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required, particularly in sustainable urban development and climate change resilience. Candidates should have experience in architecture, urban planning, and designing flood mitigation measures, as well as developing public and social facilities, sustainable housing models, and community development initiatives.
Languages: Fluency in English, both verbal and written, is mandatory for this consultancy role. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
