Job Overview:
The position of Driver within the UNSMIL is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of personnel and goods. The driver will also be involved in customs processes for goods collection and may be required to perform minor repairs and maintenance on vehicles. This role is essential for supporting the mission's logistical needs and ensuring that all transportation activities are conducted smoothly and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Safely driving special and armored vehicles in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Transporting authorized personnel and general cargo goods securely.
  • Coordinating with the Dispatch Supervisor on vehicle maintenance and ensuring proper documentation is maintained.
  • Collecting goods from customs while adhering to regulations.
  • Performing VIP and standby driver duties as required.
  • Keeping the Chief Transport Officer informed of any relevant information for efficient operations.
  • Delivering parcels and documents between the office and local institutions.
  • Conducting routine maintenance checks on assigned vehicles, including oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires.
  • Making minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers as needed. 1
  • Assisting in preparing vehicles for field trips, including necessary checks and maintenance. 1
  • Following proper procedures in the event of an accident. 1
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid national commercial driving/operator license (categories B and C). A defensive driving certificate for armored vehicles is desirable, as is a technical or vocational diploma in the automotive field. The role requires a strong commitment to safety and adherence to driving regulations, as well as the ability to handle various vehicle types, including light passenger vehicles and heavy armored vehicles. Candidates should demonstrate a professional attitude and a commitment to the mission's goals, particularly in promoting gender equality and client orientation.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Candidates with additional qualifications in automotive technology or related fields will be viewed favorably, particularly if they possess certifications related to defensive driving or vehicle maintenance.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in providing driver services is required. Candidates should have experience working in a United Nations common system field operation or a similar international organization. Experience in driving a variety of vehicles, including light passenger vehicles, heavy armored 4x4s, ambulances, and cargo vans is essential. Familiarity with passenger dispatching and technical knowledge in vehicle repair and maintenance will be advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Additionally, fluency in Arabic is mandatory, as it is crucial for effective communication within the local context. Knowledge of French is considered an asset, as it is also one of the working languages of the UN.

Additional Notes:
The appointment for this position is for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of renewal based on the availability of the post and budgetary approval. This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in Libya. Candidates selected from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses. Local recruits are not eligible for allowances or benefits exclusive to international staff.
