The position is located within the Peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Section of the Communications Campaigns Service in the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications at the United Nations. This section is dedicated to promoting the UN's work on critical peace and security issues, including conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, disarmament, and counter-terrorism. The organization aims to design and implement effective global communications strategies and campaigns to engage audiences worldwide on these pressing matters.

Job Overview:
The Public Information Officer will play a crucial role in implementing communications strategies and campaigns that engage global audiences on priority peace and security issues. This includes developing multimedia content targeted at specific audiences, coordinating with partners, monitoring progress, and analyzing outcomes. The officer will also be responsible for promoting media coverage of major events, developing media strategies, and managing the peace and security website. The position requires a proactive approach to media outreach and the ability to evaluate the impact of communications activities. The officer will prepare drafts for UN publications, maintain professional relationships with key constituencies, and provide guidance to junior staff. The role demands a high level of professionalism, creativity, and client orientation, ensuring that communications efforts align with the UN's mission and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Public Information Officer's duties include:
  • Implementing communications strategies and campaigns to engage global audiences on peace and security issues.
  • Developing audience-targeted multimedia content and coordinating efforts with partners.
  • Monitoring and analyzing current events and public opinion to advise management on appropriate actions.
  • Promoting media coverage through press conferences, interviews, and seminars.
  • Editing and writing web-optimized content for the peace and security website.
  • Evaluating the results and impact of communications activities, ensuring clear KPIs are established.
  • Preparing drafts for UN newsletters and reports based on official documentation.
  • Initiating and sustaining professional relationships with key constituencies.
  • Planning outreach activities and public events related to peace and security. 1
  • Acting as a focal point for specific issues and providing guidance to junior staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a comprehensive understanding of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential for effective campaign strategies. They should be able to analyze diverse information, identify public affairs issues, and handle sensitive situations diplomatically. The ability to produce clear and concise written communications and deliver oral presentations is crucial. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, creativity, and a client-oriented mindset, with a commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Candidates should have experience in campaign planning and execution, as well as in editorial planning and writing/editing web and campaign content. Experience in web and social analytics is desirable, along with knowledge of peace and security matters.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, while knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage.

This position is temporarily available for an initial period of 3 months with the possibility of extension.
