Job Overview: The Security Coordination Officer position is critical within the Security and Safety Services (SSS) of the ECA. The incumbent will be responsible for managing day-to-day security operations in accordance with United Nations security policies. This includes conducting security risk assessments, developing and implementing security standards, and advising senior officials on safety and security matters. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying security trends and advising on potential threats to UN assets and personnel. The officer will also support the development of risk management strategies and ensure effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance security coordination. The position demands a high level of professionalism and the ability to make quick decisions in emergencies, ensuring the safety and security of UN operations in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Security Coordination Officer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities including: assisting in the management of security operations, conducting security risk assessments, developing and implementing security standards, advising on safety and security matters, forecasting security environments, supporting risk management strategies, preparing and reviewing security planning documents, advising on the inclusion of security in UN activities, managing security-related projects, monitoring compliance and preparedness, enhancing communication with security focal points, collaborating with NGOs and government representatives, conducting security training, supporting organizational resilience and crisis planning, establishing a functioning Security Communication System, and managing the performance of security personnel. The officer will also be responsible for collecting and analyzing data to identify security trends and providing insights for decision-making.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in security management, with a solid understanding of military or security specialization. They should demonstrate respect for diversity and the ability to work in various cultural settings. Effective interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to implement policies are essential. The officer must be capable of making quick decisions in emergencies, communicating complex concepts effectively, and managing multiple high-level projects. A commitment to professional development and accountability in security risk management is also required.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as business or public administration, political/social science, psychology, criminal justice, law, international relations, or security management is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A diploma from a police or military institution may also be considered. Completion of relevant programs in data analytics or business analytics is advantageous.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in security management is required, with demonstrated experience in compound and physical security as well as international security-related issues. Experience in data analytics or related fields for two years or more is desirable, indicating a strong analytical capability in security contexts.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French or other UN official languages is desirable, enhancing communication capabilities within the organization and with international partners.
