Job Overview: The GBV Coordination Specialist position is crucial for providing technical guidance and coordination support to the GBV Coordination and UNFPA programme in Northeast Syria. The incumbent will work closely with various humanitarian and development agencies, including UN, NGOs, and government entities, to ensure effective GBV coordination, monitoring, and program implementation. This role requires a strong commitment to advancing gender equality and addressing gender-based violence through collaborative efforts with multiple stakeholders. The specialist will lead the GBV sub-sector coordination, ensuring that GBV prevention and response interventions are effectively integrated into the broader humanitarian response. The position demands a proactive approach to capacity building, partnership strengthening, and the integration of GBV programming with other UNFPA mandate areas, such as reproductive health and youth resilience.
Duties and Responsibilities: The GBV Coordination Specialist will be responsible for leading multi-sectoral GBV sub-sector coordination at the sub-national level, collaborating with various stakeholders to facilitate inter-agency GBV prevention and response interventions. Key responsibilities include providing technical support for the development and implementation of coordinated GBV prevention and response programs, representing the GBV Sub-Sector at relevant coordination meetings, and ensuring that GBV and protection are mainstreamed across all sectors. The specialist will also coordinate the implementation of UNFPA’s GBV components in humanitarian and recovery response activities, support capacity building for implementing partners, and oversee the development of GBV assessment tools. Additionally, the role involves monitoring and evaluating program progress, preparing reports, and conducting field visits to ensure quality project implementation. The specialist will manage GBV staff and resources, support communication and visibility activities, and represent UNFPA in various forums as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of a Master's degree in gender and development, gender studies, population studies, public health, international development, social sciences, or related fields. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in gender/GBV program implementation is required, along with substantive knowledge of GBV programming in humanitarian and post-conflict settings. Candidates should demonstrate leadership and facilitation skills, the ability to work harmoniously in multicultural environments, and experience in managing teams and office representation. Proficiency in computer applications, particularly MS Office, is essential, as is experience in developing and delivering gender/GBV training.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Master's degree in a relevant field such as gender and development, gender studies, population studies, public health, international development, or social sciences. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively address the complexities of gender-based violence and related issues in humanitarian contexts.
Experience: The position requires at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in gender and GBV program implementation. Candidates should have substantial knowledge and practical experience in GBV programming, particularly in humanitarian and post-conflict recovery settings. Experience in managing teams and representing organizations in international and multicultural environments is also essential. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of gender issues in development, including relevant international human rights standards.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge and experience working in Arabic is considered an advantage, as it will facilitate communication and collaboration with local stakeholders and partners in the region.
