Job Overview:
The Emergency WASH Project Manager (PM) will lead the rapid response mechanism in North Darfur and surrounding areas. This role involves developing and managing a humanitarian watch system, conducting rapid needs assessments, and implementing emergency responses across various sectors, including WASH and food assistance. The PM will also be responsible for recruiting and training emergency team members, ensuring they are well-prepared to address the urgent needs of affected populations. The position requires close collaboration with the Field Coordinator to understand the local context and build acceptance within communities, while effectively targeting the key needs of the populations affected by the ongoing conflict.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Emergency WASH PM will have a range of responsibilities, including:
  • Leading the rapid response mechanism in North Darfur, ensuring timely and effective humanitarian assistance.
  • Developing and managing the humanitarian watch system to monitor needs and responses.
  • Conducting rapid needs assessments to identify urgent requirements in affected areas.
  • Implementing emergency response activities across WASH, food assistance, and shelter distributions.
  • Recruiting and training emergency team members, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
  • Collaborating with the Field Coordinator to assess security and access challenges, and to develop strategies for effective response.
  • Building relationships with local communities and authorities to facilitate operations and ensure acceptance.
  • Contributing to the development of an emergency strategy and its implementation across SI bases in Darfur.
  • Managing the logistics and operational aspects of emergency response activities, including resource allocation and team coordination.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as business or international relations. Additionally, they should have a strong background in the humanitarian sector, with 3-4 years of experience, and at least 0-2 years in a similar position. Technical skills in managing WASH programs and conducting rapid needs assessments are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to develop strategies for emergency response and have experience working in hard-to-reach and remote areas. Strong initiative, adaptability, and the ability to work under pressure are critical attributes for this role.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as business, international relations, or a related discipline. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding of the humanitarian context in which they will be operating.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3-4 years of experience in the humanitarian sector, with at least 0-2 years in a similar role. This experience should include managing WASH programs and conducting rapid needs assessments in emergency contexts. Familiarity with the challenges of working in volatile environments and the ability to respond effectively to crises are crucial for success in this position.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization and with international partners. Proficiency in Arabic is considered a strong asset, as it will facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders in Sudan.

  • The role is based in El Fasher, North Darfur, which is classified as a level 4 security base due to ongoing conflict. The salary for this position starts at EUR 2310 gross per month, which includes a base salary and an annual leave allowance. Additionally, a monthly per diem of USD 750 is provided, along with accommodation and travel expenses covered by the organization. Expatriates will also receive an insurance package that covers healthcare expenses, including medical and surgical costs, dental care, and repatriation. Living conditions in Tawila, where the team is based, are described as good, with individual bedrooms and shared facilities. However, conditions may vary during field deployments.
