Job Overview:
The Laboratory Technician position is crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of UN personnel in South Sudan. The technician will work under the supervision of Medical Officers and will be responsible for collecting and analyzing various biological samples, conducting routine tests, and ensuring the quality and reliability of clinical test results. This role is essential in supporting the medical team in managing communicable diseases and ensuring proper laboratory administration. The technician will also play a key role in training and supervising laboratory assistants, contributing to the overall healthcare services provided by UNMISS.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Technician will undertake a variety of tasks including: collecting samples for various tests such as Biochemistry, Hematology, and Immuno-Serology; conducting COVID-19 tests and managing sample transportation; assisting in contact tracing for communicable diseases; managing laboratory administration and patient records; verifying and releasing clinical test results; recommending quality control mechanisms; ensuring proper handling of blood products; monitoring laboratory inventory; recording and reporting laboratory data; contributing to infection control measures; performing procedures using laboratory techniques; maintaining laboratory equipment; and training laboratory assistants. The technician will also be expected to perform any additional duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer or other medical officers.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high degree of integrity and professionalism, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of their responsibilities. They should demonstrate accountability by adhering to organizational rules and regulations. Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to manage a high volume of work efficiently. Effective teamwork and respect for diversity are crucial, as the technician will work in a multicultural environment. Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written, are required, as well as flexibility to work in remote and hazardous locations.

Educational Background:
A degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field is required. Candidates should have a solid understanding of laboratory techniques and procedures, as well as knowledge of quality control mechanisms in a laboratory setting. Additional certifications or training in laboratory management or public health would be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably in a clinical or public health environment. Experience in managing laboratory operations and working with automated laboratory equipment is highly desirable. Familiarity with international health standards and practices, particularly in conflict or post-conflict settings, will be an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UN. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in South Sudan, such as Arabic or local dialects, would be considered an advantage.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as a non-family duty station, and candidates should be prepared for austere living conditions with shared accommodations. The role is full-time, and the contract duration is until 15 March 2024, with the possibility of extension based on the mission's needs. Candidates must be willing to live and work in challenging environments, including potential travel within the mission area. Compensation and benefits will be in accordance with UN standards.
