Job Overview: The Generator Technician position is a critical role within the Engineering Section of UNMISS, directly supervised by the Juba Field Engineer. The technician will oversee electrical and electromechanical activities, particularly those related to generators. This includes the installation and repair of generators, synchronizing panels, and solar farms. The technician will also be involved in planning and implementing a power monitoring system, developing technical specifications, and ensuring compliance with UN standards. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment, contributing to the overall mission of UNMISS in promoting peace and stability in South Sudan.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Generator Technician will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including: supervising electrical and electromechanical activities, particularly generator-related tasks; applying engineering practices to complete projects; developing technical data for generator sets and electrical systems; planning and implementing a power monitoring system; evaluating contractor performance; ensuring proper sizing of generators based on electrical loads; recording and reporting fuel consumption; preparing technical reports and drawings; ensuring compliance with waste management policies; providing training to national personnel; and performing other duties as assigned by the Chief of Engineering Operations. The technician will also be expected to engage in volunteerism activities and promote capacity development among local personnel.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in electrical engineering or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in generator operations and maintenance. The role requires a high degree of autonomy, initiative, and the ability to work independently in a politically sensitive environment. Candidates should have excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to manage multiple projects, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment are essential.
Educational Background: A degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in generator maintenance and operations are highly desirable. Candidates should have a solid understanding of electrical systems and engineering principles, as well as experience with power generation technologies.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, specifically in the maintenance and operation of generators and electrical systems. Experience working in a humanitarian or peacekeeping context is an advantage, as is familiarity with UN protocols and standards.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly local languages spoken in South Sudan, is considered an asset and may enhance communication with local personnel and communities.
