Job Posting Organization:
The internship is offered by the Macroeconomic Policy and Financing for Development Division (MPFD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). ESCAP was established to promote economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, and it serves 53 member states and 9 associate members. The organization focuses on addressing the diverse challenges faced by these countries, taking into account their unique geographic, demographic, and socioeconomic conditions. ESCAP aims to foster regional cooperation and integration, and it engages in various capacity-building activities, policy dialogues, and research initiatives to support sustainable development in the region.

Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Intern will be involved in supporting the research and capacity development activities of the MPFD. The intern will work under the guidance of the Section Chief and a responsible officer, contributing to the Division's research work and assisting in the organization of workshops and meetings. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in macroeconomic policy and financing for development, with a focus on analytical studies and policy-oriented research. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in various tasks related to macroeconomic policy analysis and financing for development, gaining insights into the challenges and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's responsibilities will include conducting research and analysis in areas such as monetary policy, fiscal policy, and public finance governance. They will identify risks to sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region and prepare summary tables and graphs for ESCAP publications. In the area of financing for development, the intern will research sustainable financing instruments, support the implementation of demonstration projects, and assist in technical consultations and workshops. The intern will also be expected to document case studies and best practices related to financing for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the internship, candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree. Relevant fields of study include macroeconomics, international economics, development studies, political economy, and related areas. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and possess the ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. While no prior work experience is required, skills in statistical analysis and computer literacy in software applications are desirable. Good drafting and communication skills are also important.

Educational Background:
Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level). Relevant fields of study include economics, finance, environmental studies, and related disciplines.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required for this internship. However, candidates should possess skills and knowledge that can contribute to the work of the United Nations during their internship. Experience in reference research, data analysis, and statistical methods is desirable but not mandatory.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Chinese, or Russian, is considered an asset. The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French.

The internship is unpaid and requires a commitment of 35 hours per week for a minimum duration of two months, extendable up to six months. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and candidates should be aware of their visa requirements before accepting an internship offer.
