Job Overview: As a Mechanical Engineer in the CERN Cryogenic Group, you will play a crucial role in the design and delivery of advanced cryogenic systems for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). This position requires a deep understanding of cryogenic systems, as you will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of large volume cryostats that house Time Projection Chambers in liquid argon. You will collaborate with a team of experts to develop, design, and construct key cryogenic systems, ensuring they meet project specifications and timelines. Your work will involve translating system requirements into technical specifications, overseeing the tendering process, and validating designs while coordinating with suppliers to maintain quality and safety standards. This role is integral to the success of the DUNE collaboration, and you will be expected to engage actively in system evaluations and testing programs to ensure optimal performance of the cryogenic systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtain a thorough understanding of the cryogenic system under development for the DUNE experiment by actively engaging in system evaluations and participating in the ongoing test program.
Take a leading role in the design and development of the DUNE cryogenic system, working closely with CERN colleagues and the DUNE collaboration to deliver solutions that meet project specifications and timelines.
Collaborate in defining the DUNE cryogenic system under CERN's responsibility, ensuring compatibility with the overall DUNE cryogenics architecture and operational requirements.
Translate cryogenic system requirements into comprehensive technical specifications, driving the tendering process by providing clear and precise documentation to support supplier selection and procurement.
Assure design validation and follow-up on the manufacturing of the cryogenic system, coordinating with the selected supplier to ensure adherence to quality, safety, and delivery standards.
Engage in problem-solving activities related to cryogenic systems, identifying and addressing issues as they arise.
Participate in team meetings and contribute to the overall success of the DUNE collaboration by sharing knowledge and expertise with colleagues.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Thermodynamics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
Demonstrated experience in the design and manufacturing follow-up of large cryogenic installations, including defining requirements and preparing technical specifications.
Proven experience in applying tendering processes, overseeing supplier manufacturing, and ensuring compliance with technical specifications and performance criteria.
Experience working in large international collaborations, with the ability to represent technical interests and effectively coordinate with diverse stakeholders.
Familiarity with complex industrial processes involving cryogenics or vacuum technologies, with a focus on system reliability and safety, is a major asset.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Thermodynamics, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, thermodynamics, and cryogenic systems.
Experience: The position requires demonstrated experience in the design and manufacturing follow-up of large cryogenic installations. Candidates should have a proven track record of defining requirements, preparing technical specifications, and overseeing supplier manufacturing processes. Experience in international collaborations and dealing with complex industrial processes is essential, particularly in the context of cryogenics or vacuum technologies. A focus on system reliability and safety is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English at a professional level is mandatory, including the ability to draft technical specifications and scientific reports, as well as make oral presentations. Proficiency in spoken French is advantageous, and candidates should be willing to acquire it if not already proficient.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 3 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are 40 hours per week, and the role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and the need for a valid driving license. Candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the organization's needs. Due to occupational health risks associated with this position, selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade for this position is 6-7, and the job reference is TE-CRG-CL-2025-13-LD.
