Job Overview: The Senior Data Scientist will play a crucial role in leading the data science initiatives within the organization. This position involves planning and directing the work program on data science, providing both methodical and managerial supervision of all activities. The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for exploring, identifying, and acquiring data sources to ensure their suitability for decision-making processes that align with the organization's goals. This role requires close collaboration with key clients to leverage data science methods to support their programmatic areas, ensuring that data-driven solutions are effectively implemented. Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Data Scientist will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Planning and directing the work program on data science, ensuring effective management and evaluation of staff performance.
Leading the exploration and acquisition of data sources, applying quality methods to prepare data for analytical use.
Establishing strong working relationships with clients to support their programmatic needs through data science solutions.
Coordinating the design and development of data science products that provide insights and knowledge through advanced analytical methods.
Liaising with technology stakeholders to access necessary infrastructure and software for data science product development.
Promoting data science solutions through client training and the development of tools and processes.
Designing customized visualization and presentation products to communicate findings effectively.
Guiding and supervising staff in their functions.
Representing the organization at international and regional meetings. 1
Advising senior management on data science trends and recommending actions.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in data science, with a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, or related fields. At least five years of experience with statistical and computational methods, including clustering, forecasting, and machine learning, is required. Additionally, candidates should have managerial experience, demonstrating leadership skills and the ability to manage teams effectively. Familiarity with data science tools and programming languages such as R, Python, and JavaScript is essential, along with experience in large dataset tools like Hadoop and Spark.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in data science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, with at least five years specifically in statistical and computational methods. Experience in leading and managing innovative data science solutions at the enterprise level for complex digital transformation initiatives is also required.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is considered an advantage.
