Established in 1969, UNFPA operates in over 150 countries and has a mission to promote reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls. The organization is committed to achieving three transformative results by 2030: ending preventable maternal deaths, ending unmet need for family planning, and ending gender-based violence and harmful practices. UNFPA's strategic plan for 2022-2025 emphasizes the need to recover lost gains due to the Covid-19 pandemic and to build forward better, ensuring that women and girls have access to essential health services and rights.
Job Overview: The position of International Consultant involves developing and facilitating workshops aimed at strengthening the capacities of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in engaging men to promote gender equality and address gender-based violence (GBV). The consultant will work closely with a national expert and will be responsible for conducting two workshops in Kazakhstan, specifically in the cities of Astana and Almaty. The workshops will target representatives from various sectors, including NGOs, activists, and educators, focusing on equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to involve men in the prevention of GBV. The consultant will also support a team leader in coordinating a regional workshop that addresses discriminatory gender social norms across Central Asia, aiming to provide practical solutions and enhance collaboration among participants.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
Develop and facilitate two three-day workshops for CSOs on engaging men and changing social norms related to GBV.
Review existing documents and materials related to engaging men in gender equality and GBV prevention.
Create a Concept Note and Agenda for the workshops, ensuring they are tailored to the local context.
Prepare workshop materials, including presentations and handouts, and ensure they are adaptable for the audience.
Facilitate discussions and activities during the workshops, fostering a safe and inclusive environment for participants.
Prepare a detailed report on the outcomes of the workshops, incorporating feedback from participants.
Support the team leader in coordinating a three-day regional workshop, providing insights and facilitating sessions on addressing discriminatory gender norms.
Analyze relevant literature and data to inform the workshops and present findings to participants.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess extensive experience (at least 10 years) in gender equality, gender-based violence, and addressing discriminatory gender norms. They should have a strong background in developing training materials on GBV issues and positive masculinity, as well as experience in creating strategic documents related to the involvement of men in promoting gender equality. Knowledge of the sexual and gender-based violence agenda, particularly in Central Asia, is essential. Experience working with UN agencies or international organizations on similar assignments is preferred. Candidates should also demonstrate strong analytical skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to gender awareness and sensitivity.
Educational Background: A higher education degree in humanities or a related field is required. A master's degree in the mentioned areas will be considered an advantage, as it indicates a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding gender issues and social norms.
Experience: The position requires at least 10 years of relevant experience in the fields of gender equality, gender-based violence, and working with men and boys in promoting gender equality. Candidates should have a proven track record of developing training materials and conducting workshops on these topics, as well as experience in analyzing and developing strategies and policies related to gender norms and violence prevention.
Languages: Proficiency in Russian is mandatory for this position, as it is essential for effective communication with workshop participants. Knowledge of English is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate access to additional resources and collaboration with international stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is likely to be a consultancy role, with a focus on full-time engagement during the workshop periods. The consultant will be expected to work collaboratively with both local and international teams, and there may be opportunities for further assignments based on performance.
