Job Overview: The Victims Rights Officer position is crucial for addressing the needs and rights of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse in South Sudan. The role involves supporting the Senior Victims’ Rights Officer in implementing policies and programs aimed at assisting victims. The officer will work closely with various UN system actors and local organizations to ensure that victims have access to necessary support services and that their rights are upheld. Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the Senior Victims’ Rights Officer in implementing policies and programs related to victims' assistance and support.
Maintain direct and regular contact with victims to understand their needs and provide necessary support.
Engage with UN system actors to ensure effective complaint/reporting mechanisms are in place.
Participate in networks focused on protection against sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as gender-based violence.
Assist in the collation of systemwide data on victims' assistance and expand the Victim Assistance Tracking System (VATS).
Conceptualize and draft project proposals for funding to support victims of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Provide support for victims' access to justice and legal services, including maintaining a roster of pro bono lawyers.
Facilitate paternity claims on behalf of victims in collaboration with UN-system actors.
Support fundraising efforts and prepare funding applications and reports.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to the principles of human rights and victim support. They should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. A solid understanding of the issues surrounding sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as experience in victim advocacy or support, is essential. Candidates should also have strong analytical skills and the ability to manage sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion.
Educational Background: A degree in social work, law, human rights, international relations, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees are preferred and may enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role. Training or certification in victim advocacy or support services is also beneficial.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in victim support, human rights advocacy, or a related field. Experience working in challenging environments, particularly in conflict or post-conflict settings, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN policies and procedures, especially regarding sexual exploitation and abuse, will be an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in South Sudan is an asset and may enhance communication with victims and local stakeholders.
