Job Overview: The Gender, Youth, and Social Inclusion (GYSI) Lead position is crucial for the upcoming USAID-funded BHA Uganda Resilience security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Food Security Activity (RFSA). This role focuses on the successful integration of gender, youth, and social inclusion strategies into the RFSA's design, implementation, and monitoring processes. The GYSI Lead will ensure that the program effectively addresses the needs and challenges of women, youth, and marginalized groups, providing technical leadership and capacity building while adhering to USAID’s gender equality and social inclusion policies. The position requires proactive leadership to promote gender equity, youth engagement, and social inclusion across all program components, overseeing the development and execution of relevant strategies to ensure interventions are contextually appropriate, effective, and sustainable.
Duties and Responsibilities: The GYSI Lead will be responsible for several essential duties, including:
Technical Leadership: Leading the integration of gender, youth, and social inclusion strategies into all program activities, ensuring alignment with USAID's policies.
Strategy Development: Developing and implementing the program’s Gender Strategy, Youth Strategy, and Social Inclusion Strategy in line with RFSA objectives.
Capacity Building: Providing ongoing technical assistance and capacity building to program staff, partners, and stakeholders.
Program Implementation: Ensuring integration of GYSI considerations throughout the project lifecycle.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Collaborating with the MEL team to track GYSI-related indicators and inform program adaptations.
Community Engagement: Working with community leaders to promote gender equity and social inclusion.
Prevention and Response: Leading efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) within the program.
Compliance: Ensuring all activities comply with USAID standards. 1
Cross-Sector Integration: Collaborating with project teams to integrate social protection strategies and enhance community resilience.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in gender studies, international development, social sciences, or a related field. They should have a minimum of seven years of experience in gender, youth, and social inclusion activities within international development, particularly in resilience and food security programming. Demonstrated experience in leading GYSI components of large-scale programs and conducting gender and social inclusion analyses is essential. Proven expertise in capacity building and technical assistance to government institutions and community stakeholders is required, along with strong familiarity with social inequalities in Uganda or similar contexts. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory, with proficiency in French and/or local languages considered an advantage.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in gender studies, international development, social sciences, or a related field. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively lead gender, youth, and social inclusion initiatives within the context of international development.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in gender, youth, and social inclusion activities, particularly in the context of international development. Candidates should have a proven track record of leading GYSI components in large-scale programs and conducting gender and social inclusion analyses, demonstrating their capability to manage complex projects effectively.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Additionally, proficiency in French and/or local languages is considered advantageous, as it may enhance communication with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: The position may require regular attendance at least five days a week, with the possibility of working outside normal office hours or on weekends as project needs dictate. Travel across Uganda is required, and candidates should be prepared for field visits that may involve exposure to high-security risks and basic living conditions. The role emphasizes gender equality commitments and a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, fostering an inclusive and respectful work environment for all stakeholders.
