The DCO serves as the secretariat to the UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) and manages the Resident Coordinator (RC) system. The DCO aims to ensure that the UN development system is well-coordinated and accountable, working towards the common goal of sustainable development across various regions, including Latin America and the Caribbean.

Job Overview:

Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall mission of the DCO, which includes facilitating inter-agency programs, fostering strategic partnerships, promoting universal values such as human rights and gender equality, and providing administrative and operational support. Interns will typically work full-time, five days a week, and will report to professional staff within the organization. The internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic international environment, while also contributing to the UN's efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a wide range of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Coordination and Executive Support: - Collating guidance materials on knowledge capture and sharing. - Assisting in the collection and dissemination of emerging good practices and lessons learned for DCO and UNSDG members. - Facilitating online communities of practice. - Supporting the preparation of senior-level management meetings, conferences, and retreats. - Preparing slide decks, background papers, and option papers for meetings. - Tracking and analyzing UNSDG decisions and their implementation. - Assisting in the preparation of speeches and talking points.
  • Strategic Planning, Data & Analytics: - Supporting analytics on issues related to DCO/UNSDG, including needs, priorities, resources, risks, and performance. - Assisting in the development of corporate visualization solutions using data from multiple sources. - Building interactive dashboards and reports using analytics applications. - Performing ad-hoc analysis and presenting results clearly. - Supporting geo-spatial analysis and geographic information systems.
  • Policy Analysis & Programme Facilitation: - Monitoring and analyzing regional trends across various thematic areas. - Supporting the preparation of analytical reports and policy documents. - Assisting in the formulation of strategies and policies. - Supporting knowledge management of policy and program data.
  • Administration and Operational Support: - Assisting in the preparation and review of financial and human resource proposals. - Monitoring expenditures against approved budgets. - Assisting in the administration of contracts and auditing invoices. - Performing other related administrative duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in a related field of study; (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in a related field. Applicants should demonstrate their intention to pursue further studies or work in a relevant field. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is expected, and no prior work experience is required for this internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in a field relevant to the internship, such as international relations, development studies, public administration, or a related discipline. The internship is open to those in graduate programs or final year undergraduate students.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, candidates should possess skills and knowledge that would benefit the UN during their internship, such as familiarity with data analysis tools or experience in project management.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish and English is required for this position, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official UN language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's profile.
