The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the designated entity within the United Nations system that addresses environmental issues at both global and regional levels. Established to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus, UNEP plays a crucial role in keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO), located in Panama City, works closely with 33 countries in the region, including 16 small island developing states. The office's activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), and it is responsible for coordinating various initiatives under the LAC Forum of Ministers of Environment.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at UNEP's Latin America and the Caribbean Office is designed to provide support for the implementation of various environmental programs and projects. Interns will work under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officers, contributing to initiatives related to sustainable consumption, environmental education, circular economy, and pollution management. The role involves engaging with intergovernmental networks and coalitions, assisting in the organization of meetings and workshops, and conducting research and analysis on key environmental issues affecting the region. Interns will also be responsible for maintaining online platforms and ensuring that information is current and accessible. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international environmental policy and project management within a prestigious global organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including: supporting the follow-up and implementation of workstreams and projects; managing online platforms by uploading relevant information and maintaining updated content; assisting in the organization of meetings, workshops, and webinars; preparing agendas, drafting background materials, and taking minutes; conducting research and literature reviews; analyzing data and drafting documents summarizing findings; and supporting project development by gathering relevant information. The internship is full-time, requiring interns to work five days a week for a total of 40 hours, and it may be conducted remotely, in-person, or in a hybrid format.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (Master's Degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Relations, Social Sciences, Law, or Business Administration; be in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level) in the same fields; or have graduated with a university degree in these areas. Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Educational expertise focused on the United Nations and knowledge of critical environmental issues in the Latin American and Caribbean region are considered assets.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or completion of a degree in Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Relations/Development, Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong academic foundation that supports their understanding of environmental policies and practices, as well as the ability to engage with complex issues relevant to the region.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in environmental issues and the workings of international organizations. Experience in research, project management, or related fields will be advantageous and may enhance a candidate's application. Interns are expected to be proactive and willing to learn, contributing to the team's objectives effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Spanish is required for this internship, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is beneficial, and proficiency in Portuguese would be considered an asset, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the region and enhancing communication with various stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid and is expected to last for six months. Interns will work full-time, five days a week, under the supervision of UNEP staff. While the internship is based in Panama City, there is flexibility regarding the work modality, allowing for remote work or a combination of in-person and remote arrangements. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and candidates should be aware of visa requirements if they are not citizens or permanent residents of Panama.
