Job Overview: The Political Affairs Intern will be involved in supporting the UNRCPD in its mission to promote peace and disarmament in the Asia and Pacific region. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in the field of political affairs, particularly in the areas of disarmament and non-proliferation. Interns will have the opportunity to work on various programmatic areas, including Weapons of Mass Destruction, Conventional Arms and Ammunition, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education, and Cross-Cutting Issues such as Gender, Youth, and Emerging Technologies Security. The intern's daily responsibilities will vary based on their background and the specific needs of the office, providing a comprehensive learning experience in international relations and disarmament.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will undertake a variety of tasks that may include, but are not limited to: assisting in drafting and preparing official documents; conducting document, legal, and internet research; providing assistance during conferences and meetings; and working on web presentations. The role is designed to give interns exposure to the workings of the United Nations and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that support the organization's goals in peace and disarmament.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: they must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or they must be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should possess strong research and writing skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a background in political science, international relations, law, or a related field. A graduate degree or a bachelor's degree nearing completion is preferred, as this internship is aimed at individuals who are pursuing or have completed higher education in relevant disciplines.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships or volunteer work in international relations, disarmament, or related fields will be considered an asset. The internship is designed for individuals who are looking to gain practical experience and develop their skills in a professional setting.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and will enhance the candidate's application.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days per week, totaling 35 hours. Interns will work under the supervision of a professional staff member at UNRCPD and will report directly to the Director of the Centre.
