The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was established in 2002 as a Political/Peacebuilding Mission, directed and supported by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). UNAMA's mission is to support the Afghan government and people in their efforts to achieve peace and stability, promote human rights, and facilitate humanitarian assistance. The organization operates in various regions of Afghanistan, focusing on human rights, governance, and development initiatives. Job Overview:
The Assistant Human Rights Officer position is situated within the UNAMA Central Regional Office in Kabul, Afghanistan. This role is designed for a national UN Volunteer who will work under the direct supervision of the Human Rights Team Leader and will be supported by the Head of Field Office. The primary functions of this position encompass several thematic areas, including human rights, women's rights, and the elimination of violence against women (EVAW). The volunteer will be expected to develop a comprehensive understanding of international human rights laws and Afghanistan's obligations, monitor and report on human rights violations, and engage in dialogue with civil society and local authorities. The role also involves assisting in field missions, maintaining contact with stakeholders, and handling sensitive information with discretion. This position is crucial for promoting human rights and supporting the UN's mission in Afghanistan, particularly in the context of women's rights and conflict resolution.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Human Rights Officer include:
  • Developing an understanding of international human rights and law, particularly in relation to UNAMA's priorities.
  • Monitoring, verifying, and reporting on human rights violations, preparing related documentation, and maintaining databases.
  • Engaging in discussions within the Human Rights Team to analyze the human rights situation in the Central Region.
  • Handling sensitive information with care and impartiality.
  • Conducting human rights dialogues with civil society and local authorities.
  • Assisting in visits to detention facilities and maintaining contact with relevant stakeholders.
  • Organizing and conducting field missions to gather information on human rights conditions.

  • Providing interpretation and translation services between Pashto/Dari and English. 1
  • Performing any other related tasks as assigned by the Human Rights Team Leader.

Required Qualifications:

The duration of the assignment is subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance, with no expectation of renewal. The position is a national UN Volunteer role, and the selected candidate will receive a monthly Volunteer Living Allowance to cover living expenses. Life, health, and permanent disability insurance are included, along with provisions for travel to the duty station if necessary.
