Job Overview: The Environmental Policy Specialist position is focused on providing expert guidance and support in the development and implementation of environmental policies and strategies within the context of UNDP's mission in Liberia. The specialist will be responsible for analyzing environmental issues, formulating policy recommendations, and ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into national development plans and projects. This role requires a deep understanding of environmental governance, sustainable development practices, and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society, and the private sector. The specialist will also be expected to contribute to capacity-building initiatives and promote awareness of environmental issues among local communities and decision-makers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of environmental policies and practices in Liberia, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Develop and propose innovative policy frameworks and strategies that align with national priorities and international commitments on environmental sustainability.
Collaborate with government officials, NGOs, and other stakeholders to facilitate the integration of environmental considerations into sectoral policies and programs.
Provide technical assistance and guidance to government agencies in the formulation and implementation of environmental legislation and regulations.
Organize and participate in workshops, seminars, and training sessions to enhance the capacity of stakeholders in environmental policy development and implementation.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of environmental policies and programs, providing recommendations for adjustments as necessary.
Prepare reports and presentations on environmental policy issues for various audiences, including UNDP management and external partners.
Stay updated on global environmental trends and best practices, ensuring that UNDP's work in Liberia reflects the latest knowledge and approaches.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced degree in environmental science, public policy, or a related field.
Proven experience in environmental policy development and implementation, preferably within a governmental or international organization context.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Familiarity with UNDP's mission and operations, as well as knowledge of Liberia's environmental context and challenges.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree in environmental science, public policy, or a closely related field. A PhD in a relevant discipline would be an advantage, particularly for those looking to engage in high-level policy discussions and research.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental policy, sustainable development, or a related area. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of UNDP or similar agencies, is highly desirable.
