The organization focuses on various areas including democratic governance, peacebuilding, climate change, and disaster resilience, and has a mission to support countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Overview:
The position of Individual Consultant to Support SDG Data Visualization in Cities is aimed at enhancing the capacity of local governments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through effective data visualization and storytelling. The consultant will play a crucial role in generating visual tools that communicate the contributions of cities and local governments towards the SDGs. This role is particularly significant as local and regional governments are pivotal in implementing the SDGs, and the consultant will assist in translating complex data into accessible visual formats that can be utilized for advocacy and decision-making. The consultant is expected to work closely with the UN SDG Action Campaign and UNDP Country Offices to support local governments in their efforts to promote and implement the SDGs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for several key activities, including:
  • Collecting relevant data and impactful stories that showcase the contributions of cities and local governments to the Agenda 2030, specifically focusing on SDG targets and indicators in selected cities such as Bogota, Kumasi, and Rourkela.
  • Collaborating with the SDG local action team to filter and analyze the collected data to determine the most effective visualization options.
  • Processing the data to create three to four visualizations per city, which may include geo-localization of impacts, identification of beneficiaries, and analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">financial analysis of services provided, all aligned with the relevant SDG targets and indicators.
  • Engaging with local governments and stakeholders to ensure that the visualizations meet their needs and effectively communicate the intended messages.
  • Providing recommendations on how local governments can leverage these visual tools for better public service delivery and advocacy.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in data visualization, storytelling, and analysis, with a proven ability to translate complex data into clear and engaging visual formats. They should have experience working with local governments or in the field of sustainable development, particularly in relation to the SDGs. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders are essential. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations, particularly in relation to the SDGs, will be an advantage. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey findings and recommendations.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as data science, public policy, international development, or a related discipline is required. A master’s degree in a relevant field will be considered an asset. Candidates should have formal training in data visualization tools and techniques, as well as experience in using software for data analysis and visualization.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in data visualization, analysis, and storytelling, particularly in the context of sustainable development and local governance. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or governmental agencies on projects related to the SDGs is highly desirable. Candidates should also have a track record of successfully delivering similar projects, demonstrating their ability to manage timelines and produce high-quality outputs.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication for this consultancy. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly those relevant to the regions of focus (such as Spanish for Bogota), would be considered an asset, as it may enhance communication with local stakeholders and facilitate the collection of data and stories.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is home-based, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. The initial contract duration is set for 4 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs, with an expected total assignment duration of 12 months.
