Job Overview:
The National IC - Project Preparation Grant (PPG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change position is designed to support the UNDP's efforts in preparing projects that address biodiversity and climate change issues in Tanzania. The individual contractor will be responsible for providing expert advice and technical assistance in the development of project proposals that align with national priorities and international commitments. The role requires a deep understanding of biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation strategies, as well as the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities. The contractor will work closely with the UNDP team to ensure that the project proposals are comprehensive, feasible, and sustainable, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of biodiversity and resilience to climate change in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National IC include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting thorough assessments of biodiversity and climate change challenges in Tanzania.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to identify project opportunities and develop project concepts.
  • Preparing detailed project proposals, including logical frameworks, budgets, and implementation plans.
  • Ensuring that project proposals are aligned with UNDP's strategic priorities and national development plans.
  • Engaging in consultations with relevant government ministries, local authorities, and community representatives to gather input and support for project initiatives.
  • Providing technical guidance on biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation measures.
  • Reviewing and analyzing existing policies, strategies, and frameworks related to biodiversity and climate change.
  • Preparing reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to UNDP and stakeholders.
  • Participating in capacity-building activities to enhance the skills of local stakeholders in project development and implementation.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a range of qualifications, including:
  • Proven expertise in biodiversity conservation and climate change issues, particularly in the context of Tanzania.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable project proposals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with UNDP's project development processes and standards is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree in Environmental Science, Biodiversity Conservation, Climate Change, or a related field. A PhD in a relevant discipline would be an asset, as it demonstrates a higher level of expertise and commitment to the field.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in biodiversity conservation and climate change project development. Experience working with international organizations, particularly within the UN system, is highly desirable. Candidates should also have a track record of successfully developing and implementing projects that address environmental challenges.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all documentation and communication will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of Swahili is highly desirable, as it will facilitate engagement with local stakeholders and communities. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly if they relate to the regions or communities involved in the projects.

  • This is a consultancy role, and the contractor will be expected to work independently while coordinating with the UNDP team. The position is open to both national and international candidates, and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
