Job Overview:
This internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located in the Governance Affairs Office of UNEP at the Nairobi duty station. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Liaison Officer in the Governing Bodies Unit. The role is designed for energetic and motivated individuals who are eager to support the Office in its responsibilities as the technical secretariat for the United Nations Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs. Interns will engage in various tasks that contribute to the preparation and execution of meetings, documentation, and research related to intergovernmental procedures. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a global environmental organization and to understand the workings of international governance in environmental matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: assisting in the preparation of procedural scripts for meetings, drafting official communications to Member States, and undertaking other preparatory tasks as assigned. The intern will attend meetings and assist in preparing written summaries of discussions. They will also help with logistics during meetings, including managing interactive presentations, slide presentations, and virtual platforms. Additionally, the intern will contribute to the preparation of various procedural documents such as meeting agendas, talking points, and other briefing materials. Conducting research on intergovernmental procedures and practices of the Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs will also be part of the responsibilities. The intern may be asked to support other tasks as requested by the supervising officer.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have recently completed a degree in law, environmental science, political science, public administration, or related fields. The basic education required is below the first degree. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Program, or have completed such programs.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a degree program in law, environmental science, political science, public administration, or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate that they meet the educational criteria outlined, which includes being in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program or having completed a graduate program. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree must be provided with the application.

Experience:
The position does not require prior professional work experience. However, candidates should have a field of study that is closely related to the internship they are applying for. This means that while previous work experience is not mandatory, relevant academic background and knowledge in the environmental or governance sectors are essential.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is considered an advantage. The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French, while Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are the official languages. Therefore, proficiency in any of these languages, particularly French, would be beneficial for candidates.

All costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Kenya may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
