Job Overview: The Accountant will be responsible for performing essential accounting functions that include recording, classifying, examining, and analyzing financial transactions. This role is crucial for the smooth implementation of the STRengthening Infectious Disease DEtection Systems (STRIDES) project aimed at enhancing global health security in Kenya. The Accountant will review and consolidate financial reports from the Kenya office monthly, manage journal entries, cash receipts, and wire payments, and respond to inquiries while assisting in training sessions. This position also involves maintaining general ledger accounts, supporting sub-ledgers, and producing various accounting reports. The Accountant will engage in accounting projects such as audits and system upgrades, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and internal controls.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Accountant's duties include applying accounting principles to a range of fiscal functions, providing support for field programs through training on financial systems, reviewing monthly financial reports for accuracy, reconciling accounts, and maintaining subsidiary ledgers. Responsibilities also encompass processing payments, preparing VAT reimbursement reports, reviewing subcontractor financial reports, maintaining financial files, assisting in analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">financial analysis projects, and preparing risk assessment reports. The Accountant will also review inter-department cash requests and journal entries, assist with audit requests, and ensure timely completion of month-end closing processes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and have the ability to apply this knowledge to various accounting tasks. Proficiency in computerized accounting software and spreadsheet applications is required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to articulate financial information clearly to clients and staff. A professional demeanor and the ability to establish effective working relationships are essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for performing complex accounting tasks and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
Experience: Typically, candidates should have a minimum of 3+ years of experience in customer service, maintaining ledger accounts, and ensuring compliance with internal controls. Experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO) is preferred, along with familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and computerized accounting software.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with the ability to read, write, and speak the language proficiently. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required for this position.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and may require less than 10% travel. The expected hiring range for this role is between KES 2,100,000 to KES 3,000,000 annually for basic salary.
