Job Overview:
The GIS Specialist position is integral to the Project Preparation Grant (PPG) Team, which is being established to develop the Project Document (Prodoc) for the AIBDES initiative in Indonesia. This role involves supporting the GEF Project Design Expert (PDE) in obtaining essential spatial information for four pre-identified project landscapes. The GIS Specialist will be responsible for conducting GIS analyses of various relevant data layers, which will inform the boundaries of targeted landscapes and help calculate indicator baselines. The position requires a strong understanding of GIS methodologies and the ability to prepare thematic project maps that reflect the project's objectives. The GIS Specialist will work closely with the FAO Representative in Indonesia and will receive technical support from the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP). This role is crucial for ensuring that the project is based on accurate and reliable spatial data, which is essential for effective landscape management and governance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The GIS Specialist will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Obtaining necessary spatial information for four pre-identified project landscapes, ensuring that the data is publicly accessible and reliable.
  • Conducting simple GIS analyses of relevant data layers, such as land/forest cover, land use, carbon stocks, land tenure, protected area networks, land/vegetation productivity, fire activity, human settlements, and infrastructure. This analysis will help finalize the boundaries of targeted landscapes and calculate indicator baselines.
  • Preparing thematic project maps of the targeted landscapes based on guidance from the PDE, including maps that reflect baseline conditions and specific categories of land-based project activities.
  • Performing area-based calculations as part of baseline assessments and for calculating GEF Core Indicators, as directed by the PDE.
  • Engaging in other relevant activities as requested by the FAO Representative to fulfill visibility objectives related to the project.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • A university degree in forestry, biodiversity conservation, environmental management, agriculture, GIS, geography, cartography, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience related to GIS and geospatial analysis.
  • A working knowledge of both Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Candidates must be nationals of Indonesia or residents in the country with a valid work permit. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate FAO core competencies, including results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for the GIS Specialist position includes a university degree in a relevant field such as forestry, biodiversity conservation, environmental management, agriculture, GIS, geography, cartography, or a related discipline.
