Job Overview: The GHG Inventory Expert position is designed to provide technical assistance and training to developing countries as they transition to the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement. The role emphasizes the importance of accurate and transparent Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventories, which are essential for tracking progress towards national and international climate goals. The expert will be responsible for developing training materials, conducting workshops, and facilitating hands-on training sessions on the use of the IPCC Inventory Software and guidelines. The position requires a deep understanding of GHG inventory methodologies, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures, and the modalities and procedures associated with the ETF. The expert will work closely with the CBIT-GSP team to tailor training programs to the specific needs of developing countries, ensuring that participants gain the necessary skills and knowledge to enhance their climate transparency and meet reporting obligations under the Paris Agreement.
Duties and Responsibilities: The GHG Inventory Expert will undertake a variety of duties and responsibilities, including:
Coordinating with the CBIT-GSP team to understand the specific needs and backgrounds of countries requesting support.
Preparing GHG Inventory training materials in both French and English, which will include presentations, case studies, and practical exercises tailored to the needs of developing countries.
Conducting hands-on training sessions on the use of the 2006 IPCC guidelines and Inventory Software, assisting participants in mastering inventory management and reporting.
Facilitating training workshop sessions that encourage interactive participation through plenary presentations, group discussions, and hands-on exercises focused on the IPCC Software and the completion of Common Reporting Tables (CRTs).
Facilitating knowledge and experience exchange among participants regarding challenges and best practices related to national GHG inventories development.
Offering follow-up support to participants through email or virtual consultations to address any queries or issues encountered in their GHG inventory development.
Delivering a final report summarizing the training outcomes, including challenges encountered and recommendations for future training initiatives.
Required Qualifications: The position requires the following qualifications:
An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Renewable Energies, Forest Management, climate policy, or a related field.
A bachelor’s degree with a relevant combination of five years of additional direct experience in developing GHG inventories and projections using modeling tools may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in GHG inventory methodologies, use of IPCC 2006 guidelines and inventory software, or international climate reporting standards.
Direct experience in developing, compiling, or reviewing GHG inventories for countries or entities, preferably with experience in developing countries.
Proven international experience in providing technical review services for national GHG inventories under the UNFCCC is desirable.
Experience in capacity-building and delivering training programs to diverse audiences is also desirable.
Familiarity with the Paris Agreement and its transparency-related provisions is an advantage.
Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
Ability to create an inclusive learning environment that promotes participation and facilitates learning among adult participants with varying levels of expertise.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Renewable Energies, Forest Management, climate policy, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree combined with significant relevant experience in GHG inventory development may be acceptable.
