Job Overview: The Forestry Officer (Mountain Partnership Secretariat) plays a crucial role in supporting the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS) within the Forestry Division at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. This position involves providing expert support to the MPS and acting as a deputy for the MPS Coordinator. The officer will work closely with the Senior Forestry Officer/MPS Coordinator to implement the MPS annual work plan, projects, and initiatives, while promoting international cooperation and advocacy for sustainable mountain development. The role requires comprehensive technical and policy expertise to support the planning, development, and implementation of divisional programs and projects in alignment with FAO's strategic framework. The officer will also be responsible for liaising with various stakeholders, including MP members and the MP Steering Committee, to enhance the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Forestry Officer include planning and leading components of multidisciplinary teams, participating in organization-wide committees and project teams, and providing specialized expertise on technical networks and international policy bodies. The officer will develop technical, analytical, monitoring, and reporting frameworks to support the planning and implementation of programs and projects. They will conduct research, data collection, and analysis to support the development of technical standards and innovative approaches. The officer will respond to country requests for technical assistance, provide backstopping to field projects, and ensure the quality of capacity development activities within Member Nations. Additionally, the officer will promote international cooperation, advocate best practices, and participate in resource mobilization activities in accordance with FAO's strategic framework.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in geography, agriculture, forestry, social sciences (including communication and journalism), or a related field, with a focus on natural resource management. A minimum of seven years of relevant experience in advocacy, promoting international alliances, sustainable mountain development, communications, and knowledge management is required. Candidates should have a working knowledge of English (proficiency - level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) at level B.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as geography, agriculture, forestry, social sciences, or natural resource management. The focus should be on social sciences, which is crucial for understanding the complexities of sustainable mountain development and effective communication strategies.
