Job Overview: The IT Automation Lead position is a critical role within the Digital Services Branch of the Information Technology Division at WFP. This position is designed for a consultant who will oversee the technical aspects of designing and implementing IT solutions that promote automation through scripting, artificial intelligence, and low-code/no-code platforms. The primary goal of this role is to develop IT solutions that adhere to WFP standards while ensuring high quality in usability and domain suitability. The consultant will work remotely, collaborating with global teams based in Nairobi, Rome HQ, and various Country Offices. The role requires a proactive approach to transforming WFP into a modern, productive, and paperless office by minimizing manual processes, thereby allowing human resources to focus on assisting the most vulnerable populations. The IT Automation Lead will report directly to the Head of Solution Development and Delivery and Engineering, and will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of WFP's IT landscape.
Duties and Responsibilities: The IT Automation Lead will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: designing the software architecture and data model of IT solutions; supporting the Product Manager in presenting IT Solution Proposals to the Architectural Board; ensuring the high technical quality of IT solutions by addressing functionality, user experience, and compliance with applicable guidelines; providing direction and guidance to off-site Development Teams; promoting task automation through tools such as scripting and low-code/no-code platforms; ensuring integration within systems based on API-first principles; setting up and maintaining IT solution environments; collaborating on maintaining continuous improvement (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) infrastructure; and creating an inspiring team environment that fosters open communication. The consultant may also be required to perform other software development-related duties as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree or a post-secondary education combined with a minimum of three years of equivalent working experience in software development or related fields. Additionally, candidates should have at least three years of professional experience in software architecture and development. Knowledge and proficiency in solutions architecture, developing high-quality IT solutions, web technologies, Git versioning systems, Agile Scrum methodologies, and mainstream software design and development practices are essential. Proven experience with programming languages such as Python, RUST, or Node is required, along with familiarity with AI agents, data pipelines, and automation pipelines. Candidates should also have practical experience with AI integration protocols and methodologies, as well as a deep understanding of Infrastructure as Code. Knowledge of PowerApps and Power Automates is considered a plus.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a relevant field such as computer science, information technology, or software engineering. Alternatively, candidates with a post-secondary education combined with substantial work experience in software development or related areas will also be considered. Continuous professional development and certifications in relevant technologies or methodologies will be advantageous.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of three years of professional experience in software architecture and development. This experience should include a strong background in designing and implementing IT solutions, as well as a proven track record of working in remote teams. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously and effectively coordinate tasks within a diverse team environment.
Languages: Fluency in both oral and written English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, candidates should possess intermediate knowledge of another official UN language, which may include Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, or Portuguese. Proficiency in a second language is desirable and will enhance a candidate's application.
