Since the Treaty is not yet in force, the organization is called the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). It was founded in 1996, has over 260 staff from over 70 countries, and is based in Vienna. The CTBTO’s main tasks are the promotion of the Treaty and the build-up of the verification regime so that it is operational when the Treaty enters into force.

Job Overview: The Radionuclide Analyst position is situated within the Monitoring and Data Analysis Section of the International Data Centre Division (IDC) at the CTBTO. The primary function of this role is to perform interactive analysis of radionuclide data, which includes analyzing gamma and beta-gamma spectra from various detection stations. The analyst will be responsible for reviewing the work of associate radionuclide analysts, providing necessary feedback, and supporting the testing and evaluation of IDC applications software in collaboration with the Scientific Applications Section. Additionally, the analyst will contribute to the training and coaching of junior analysts and ensure the efficient production of reviewed IDC products related to radionuclide technologies. The role requires active participation in enhancing procedures and guidelines for radionuclide analysis and contributing to training programs for participants from States Signatories. The analyst will also interact with other sections and units to ensure smooth operational task implementation, making this position integral to the CTBTO's mission of monitoring nuclear compliance.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Radionuclide Analyst include: 1. Performing interactive analysis of radionuclide data, including gamma and beta-gamma spectra from particulate and noble gas detection stations. 2. Reviewing the work of associate radionuclide analysts and providing constructive feedback. 3. Supporting the testing and evaluation of IDC applications software in coordination with the Scientific Applications Section. 4. Actively participating in the training and coaching of associate radionuclide analysts. 5. Executing and optimizing assigned tasks to ensure efficient and timely production of reviewed IDC products in radionuclide technologies. 6. Proposing and implementing plans to enhance procedures, rules, and guidelines for radionuclide analysis. 7. Contributing to the training of participants from States Signatories in collaboration with the Capacity Building Section. 8. Interacting with other sections and units to ensure smooth implementation of operational tasks. 9. Performing other duties as assigned by the Chief of the Monitoring and Data Analysis Section.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Radionuclide Analyst position include: 1. A university degree in nuclear science with a strong background in gamma and beta/gamma spectroscopy and radiation detection methods, or relevant experience in radionuclide data analysis. 2. At least five (5) years of relevant working experience in radionuclide spectra analysis, air monitoring, detection equipment, and understanding environmental influences on radionuclide monitoring. 3. Experience with computer-based systems, preferably Linux-based, including proficiency in programming languages and data processing tools. 4. Proven ability to monitor the work quality of others and provide relevant feedback effectively.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a university degree in nuclear science or a related field, emphasizing a strong background in gamma and beta/gamma spectroscopy and radiation detection methods. Relevant experience in radionuclide data analysis may also be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in the field of radionuclide spectra analysis, air monitoring, and detection equipment. Experience should also include knowledge of environmental influences on radionuclide monitoring and familiarity with computer-based systems, particularly those that are Linux-based, as well as programming languages and data processing tools.
Languages: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential for this position. Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered desirable and advantageous for candidates.
Additional Notes: The position is a Fixed-Term Appointment at the P-3 grade level, with a reporting date as soon as possible.
