Job Overview:
The Space Logistics and In-Space Proof-of-Concept (InSPoC) Project Manager will play a crucial role in the Space Transportation Directorate, specifically within the Beyond LEO Unit. This position involves managing the lnSPoC-4 project, which aims to develop and validate key capabilities for in-space transportation through a series of in-orbit demonstrations. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the project lifecycle, from ideation to implementation, ensuring that the projects align with the European SpaceTech ecosystem's needs. The role requires a deep understanding of in-space logistics, project management, and the ability to foster collaboration among various stakeholders in the space industry. The Project Manager will also contribute to the analysis of orbital propellant depots and ensure high standards in procurement and contract management, while providing systems engineering support across interdisciplinary teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Space Logistics and In-Space Proof-of-Concept Project Manager include:
  • Shaping and implementing the lnSPoC-4 projects as Technical Officer throughout their project lifecycle, ensuring alignment with the European SpaceTech industry.
  • Coordinating with the STS-FL Beyond LEO Manager, lnSPoC Programme Manager, and other Technical Officers to maximize project value.
  • Performing technical synthesis of in-space logistics, identifying key capabilities and technology disruptors.
  • Contributing to the analysis of the Odyssey orbital propellant depot and ensuring objectives flow down to lnSPoC-
  • Drafting statements of work and managing the procurement process for lnSPoC-4 projects.
  • Evaluating tender submissions and negotiating contracts with industry partners.
  • Managing contracted activities and assessing deliverables to ensure timely technological developments.
  • Providing systems engineering support to cross-disciplinary task forces.
  • Coordinating with other ESA directorates for technical support and commercialisation efforts. 1
  • Organising events related to the space transportation ecosystem and contributing to the STS-F roadmap collaborative process. 1
  • Promoting ESA's activities to students and researchers, and drafting papers for space conferences.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a thorough knowledge of the space transportation sector, including the New Space environment and development processes. Candidates should possess strong analytical and synthesis skills, as well as demonstrated relationship management and communication abilities. The ability to work autonomously in an international environment is essential, along with the capacity to anticipate problems and solve complex issues. Experience in functional management of cross-disciplinary teams and knowledge of advanced logistics, automation, and robotics will be considered valuable assets.

Educational Background:
A master’s degree in space engineering is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of space transportation systems and the technical challenges involved in managing in-space logistics projects.

Experience:
Candidates should have professional experience in the space industry, with a focus on in-space transportation systems. Experience in establishing system and technology roadmaps, as well as involvement in academic and public/private space transportation R&D, would be advantageous. Additionally, experience in managing complex projects and cross-disciplinary teams is preferred.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these languages is mandatory, while knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset. This linguistic proficiency is crucial for effective communication within the agency and with external stakeholders.

This position is a permanent contract within the ESA, classified under grade band A2 - A
