Job Posting Organization:
The UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC) is a UN Environment Collaborating Centre located in UN City, Copenhagen. It is actively engaged in implementing UNEP’s Climate Change Strategy and Energy Program. The organization focuses on providing science-based advisory services to emerging markets and developing countries, assisting them in their transition towards a climate-resilient, low-carbon future. UNEP-CCC plays a crucial role in global climate initiatives and collaborates with various stakeholders to promote sustainable development and climate action.

Job Overview:
The Executive Director of UNEP-CCC is responsible for providing strategic leadership and management of the Centre, overseeing a team of over 60 staff members and managing a yearly budget of approximately 13 million USD, along with a project portfolio of 80 million USD. The role involves establishing priorities for targeted investments in growth and innovation, leading the development of joint programming strategies in alignment with UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy, and engaging in fundraising efforts to support the Climate Change Division. The Executive Director will also be responsible for monitoring implementation, ensuring financial sustainability, and promoting cross-fertilization and knowledge-sharing within the organization. This position requires a strong commitment to climate action and the ability to navigate complex international environments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership for UNEP-CCC, establishing priorities for investments in growth and innovation.
  • Lead the development of joint programming strategies in consultation with UNEP senior management.
  • Develop and monitor an annual workplan and resource mobilization approach.
  • Engage in fundraising and resource mobilization efforts.
  • Oversee project activities, especially on emerging issues.
  • Plan and manage human, financial, and administrative resources.
  • Guide the production of UNEP flagship reports on emissions and adaptation.
  • Lead participation in UNFCCC COP and ensure effective communication of UNEP-CCC’s competencies.
  • Recruit and manage a diverse team of consultants. 1

  • Monitor financial decisions and ensure compliance with regulations. 1

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in engineering, environmental science, climate change, or related field.
  • Alternatively, a first-level university degree with two years of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in leadership positions, particularly in change management within an international context.
  • Deep understanding of climate science and international climate policy.
  • Proven experience in engaging with scientific and policy communities on climate change.
  • Experience in leading fundraising efforts with international donors is preferred.
  • Experience managing large teams and financial resources is desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as engineering, environmental science, or climate change. Alternatively, a first-level university degree or undergraduate degree (bachelor or equivalent) combined with two years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 15 years of experience in leadership roles, with a solid background in change management, preferably in an international context. Candidates should have a deep understanding of climate science and international climate policy, along with experience in engaging with scientific and policy communities. Experience in fundraising, managing large teams, and overseeing significant financial resources is also essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse international environment.

Additional Notes:
This is a temporary appointment with an initial duration of 6 months, subject to renewal based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
